NSW Birth 14331/1875 HORN ROSE ELENA - EDWARD - MARY ANN - MENINDIE

Qld. Marriage 29 Apr 1893/C0013 McGrath Samuel - Horn Rosie Lena

Qld. Death 31 May 1912/C0049 McGrath Samuel - Thomas McGrath - Normie Rowe * age 45

I can't find Samuel's birth.

?
Vic. Marriage 1915 REED/REID Walter (b. ) - McGRATH Rose (b. ) Vic. #8845

Vic. Death 10321/1963 REED Rose Helena 77 McGRATH Edward Leopold [?] Mary Ann BENNETT b. Queensland ? d. Thornbury, Vic.

If that is the right remarriage and death for Rose Horn then the informant assumed one marriage and therefore her father was a McGrath. Mother looks to be correct. Place of birth is wrong and age is way out.

Or I have the wrong Rose McGrath.

From search on Thomas Mcgrath has notes:

An interesting entry on the marriage record was that Thomas was a Corporal in the 11th Regiment.”
Grandfather said that Thomas was miner and a very tall man and had lost his life near Bendigo “in Quicksand”.

m/c details; Thomas McGrath and Nanny Rowe, 29 April 1850, 65/283, St John’s Church Adelaide SA, ages 21 and 18, Corporal 11th Regiment (+can’t read word), Bachelor The Barrack’s T McGrath, Spinster 21/8 William St Nanny Rowe, Clergyman Matthew B Hutt, registered 29 (+can’t read word), witnesses Sargent Hall and Joanna Rowe.

A search at Huntley Shire Offices could only find -
a poster announcing on Friday August 23rd a forthcoming benefit concert by the Sandhurst Philanthropic Club and the Northcote Band for the benefit of the family of the late THOMAS MCGRATH. Attached to the poster was a small newspaper cutting and pencilled beside are the words ‘He is still down there’. No-one in Huntley knew anything further.

There are only 5 of the nine children because the first 3 children were born in SA, the fourth child, Philip, I am not sure where he was born, and 5 in the Bendigo area, Vic.

A visit to Kew & see original records of 11th Regiment going back to 1820’s – Thomas’s military record indicated born in Co Limerick & was only 15 yrs but convinced the recruiting officer he was 17 almost 18.

From the Army records Thomas was born in Ireland and James McGrath and Mary Shuly (also spelt Shuley) are the most likely parents. This agrees with other researches particularly those researching the “Rowe” family. No-one has managed to get any further, after an extensive search.
