I am looking for any information about Robert McKay / Mackay, and his wife Janet Davidson and any family, in the Reay Caithness / Sutherland area, any time after 1817, when my g/g/grandfather William McKay was born. I believe Robert and Janet to be my g/g/g/grandparents.
Cheers
Ian McKay

01/03/1807
Mackay Robert = Janet Davidson in Reah / Caithness
GRO 040/0010 0307.

This is the only marriage that came up.I hope it helps

Dear Kingfisher
I had to rush out this morning and forgot to add that you can view the marriage certificate. If you pay £6 =30 page credits. To view the names = 1 credit and then you can pay another 5 credits to actually see the document and print it off if you want to.
www.scotlandspeople.org.uk I think
I suspect that you will need it again if they were both from Scotland so you would have some credits in hand
Best wishes

Hi there again
I didn't realise that this marriage was one you posted last year. So if you are still looking that marriage needs to be looked at to see if the parents names are on it if you are still looking

Hello again
I spent some of my credits on viewing the marriage for you. You are going to need some major help here. One of the worst pages that I have read on this site and I have viewed quite a few. Here goes !!

Marriage in March 1st 1807
Robert Mackay of Achisrilist ???to Janet Davidson of ? Hibristown.

There is no mention of parents
I had the screen on magnified and read the whole page to reason with myself as to the place names. Achisrilist is fairly accurate. The other is virtually unreadable. The Mackay's are all over the page. I think they bred from this area!!!

I do not think I can help you any further. You will have to do the rest for yourself so that it is your decision at the end of the day

Good luck

Hi Nairnmaddie
Many thanks for your efforts, and posting; however, as I think you are aware, I do already have the information you posted. What I am seeking is for any McKay / MacKay info, from the Reay Caithness/Sutherland area, after the year 1817. which was the year that my g/g/grandfather William Mckay, (Which is spelled MacKay on the 1851 Liverpool census), was born.

The reason I asked for info after the year 1817, was to discover if my g/g/grandfather William had any siblings. As It doesn't look as though I'm going to be able to get back further than Robert & Janet, as there doesn't seem to be any way of finding the names of their parents, I thought I'd try another avenue of enquiry!

If there is any way I might be able to discover who the parents of Robert & Janet were, I don't know where to look, or how to do it, and would be grateful if there is anyone who can point me in the right direction.

All census information for William MacKay, (from 1851 onwards, subsequently spelled McKay) simply says "born Scotland": however, I did manage to get back to Robert MacKay & Janet Davidson, who were both born in 1797; and, I'm 99.99....% certain that they are the parents of William Mckay, my g/g/grandfather. I'm now looking to see if William had any brothers or sisters.

Thanks again Maddie.

Best
Ian
PS. Incidentally my g/g/grandfather William married Eliza Jones, of Gresford, North Wales, in Chester, on 13th July 1847. Sometime after which date, they moved to Liverpool.

Dear Ian
From what I saw on the marriage certificate, you might need to go up to Edinburgh to sort out the places on the marriage certificate and also to sort out all the mackays. There were quite a few on that one page whether related or not. Failing that you can always try a researcher in that area

Dear Ian
I usually look in the back of the Family History magazine on sale at W.H.Smith. I haven't a clue where these places are myself and as I said at the time the old parish record book is a sight to behold. Very badly written and marked. I have not used a researcher for a long time but I would guess that the minimum cost would be £10 Hr. Someone looking might have a better idea.Sorry that I can't be more helpful
