Hello Geoff,

Thanks for looking. Here is the next one:

1871
Registration District: Kilmallie
Civil Parish: Kilmallie
County: Argyll
Address: Corpach Road
John Mcphee Head 50 Labourer Kilmallie
Jessie Mcphee Wife 46 Labourer's Wife Appin, Argyll
Allan Mcphee 19 Ag Lab Appin
Alex Mcphee 14 Scholar Kilmallie
Jessie Mcphee 12 Kilmallie <--- Janet
Mary Mcphee 8 Kilmallie
Flora Mcphee 6 Kilmallie

and it's not certain that's the same family. Names and ages and pob differ.

The marriage and the death certificate for John list different parents.

Dave

Alexander born 8 Jan 1855 was the informant for his father John's death 18 Dec 1879.

Please see if you can find Alexander in 1881. I can't find him in FS 1855 +/- 1.

I meant John's parents
Oh. Well, his death certificate has:

Death: 1879; Tomonie, Corpach, Kilmallie, Scotland; John McPhee, crofter,
married to Janet Stewart; died 18 Dec 1879; age 61; parents Alexander
McPhee, crofter, deceased and Mary McPhee M.S. Cameron, deceased; witness
Alexander McPhee, son (his mark); certificate #61

and I was wrong, his marriage does not list his father. It has Janet's as Allan.

An interesting family Geoff, but even assuming son Alex didn't know his father's parents we would have to be missing lots of children if that is John with parents. We have Alan, Alex and Donald and Jane, Ann, Janet and Mary before we get to Flora. No son named John.

The one that connects McPHEEs and McDONALDs to my tree is daughter Catherine born 23 Nov 1853 Lismore (525) Appin & Duror and I don't have her in any census until after her marriage in 1877 in Bradford:

1881
RG11 Piece 4474 Folio 111 Page 6
Civil Parish: Shipley
County: Yorkshire
Registration District: Bradford
Address: 30 Victoria Rd
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Occupation Birthplace Disability
Walter Willoughby DOUCE Head M Male 27 Master Tailor Ireland
Catherine DOUCE Wife M Female 28 Tailors Wife Scotland

I have her in census after 1881 and have her 2nd marriage and her death but missing all before 1877.

"Bygone Lochaber" by Somerled MacMillan, has the Camagael MacPhee's being descended from John MacPhee, son of John MacPhee of Achnasaul. There were ten MacPhee families in Glen Dessary cleared by Locheil in the Lochaber Clearances of 1804. This Lochiel, the 9th, was still clearing people in the 1830s, "Families who had not been disturbed for 4 or 5 hundred years are turned out of house & home!" The 10th & 11th Lochiel's were every bit as bad as the grandfather. This from a family who later claimed there were no clearances on their estate. John MacPhee was cleared from Corpach & Banavie in 1841. The Camerons were still clearing in 1883, before the Crofting Acts gave security of tenure.

Good grief, no wonder there was such turmoil, socially and otherwise :(

Thanks Geoff.

That would fit with Jessie 2 years younger. Jessie is back with family in 1891.

That must be their sister, Ann b. Glencoe.
