Can anyone confirm that the U.D. in column 2 of a birth certificate means "Urban District" ? Does this only appear on a birth certificate or does it appear on others ie. marriages/deaths. I have been 'googling' most of the afternoon without success. Any help in confirming what this entry means would be helpful = marjon

Yes Urban Districts and Rural Districts were formed in 1894 from the earlier Urban Sanitary Districts and Rural Sanitary Districts formed in 1874.

The Urban Sanitary Districts were formed in towns and the Rural Sanitary Districts were roughly the earlier Poor Law Districts minus the Urban Sanitary Districts.
