Hello crankypants,

A new puzzle. Does the Vernon come from the MENZIES or DIXON side?

Where to start?

Marriage# 2679/1859 DIXON EDWARD MENZIES MARGARET PATERSON

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 4 April 1859 p.1
MARRIAGES
On the 24th March, at Paterson, by the Rev. Thomas Stirton, Mr. Edward Dixon, of Goulburn, New South Wales, to Margaret, second daughter of the late James Menzies, Esq., of Paterson, formerly of Bristol, England.

Death Reg# 13113/1928 DIXON MARGARET M JAMES EUPHEMIA CHATSWOOD

The Sydney Morning Herald - Saturday 29 September 1928 p.14
DEATHS
DIXON.-September 28, 1928, at her residence, Borambil-street, Warrawee, Margaret Menzies, widow of the late Edward Dixon, of Drummoyne and Singleton, in her 94th year.

1903 N.S.W Electoral Roll - Parkes - Drummoyne
DIXON Edward, Collingwood-street, independant means
DIXON Margaret Menzies, Collingwood-street, domestic duties
DIXON Harry Vernon, Collingwood-street, chemist *** son

There are three Edward DIXONs in NSW - one the son of a convict. I don't have the death of the one who married Margaret yet so let's work on Margaret first.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

It's possible John is not related to Margaret and that the Vernon (although Scottish and more likely to be from the Menzies side) may in fact come from the DIXON side and that there is a connection between Sarah Ann and one of the Edward DIXONs.

This one is listed as a housemaid from Cheshire so she may not be the one who married John ???

DIXON Sarah Ann 25 'Admiral Lyons' 1858 Sydney and/or Newcastle Reel 2138, [4/4795]

One of the Edward DIXONs was the son of a convict and he has a sibling Sarah.

So there are two things to solve:

1) Are John & Margaret MENZIES related?

2) Which of the two Sarah DIXONs married John?

EDIT: Deaths:
9039/1909 MENZIES SARAH A WILLIAM - DRUMMOYNE
15022/1917 MENZIES JOHN 85 YRS DRUMMOYNE DRUMMOYNE

Dave

Hello crankypants,

So we have:

Edward DIXON b. abt 1831 - parents William & Mary

So that rules out the son of a convict and sibling Sarah:

One Edward DIXON arrived about 1837 aged about 10, with siblings Thomas, Sarah and Catherine and mother Catherine (nee HUGHES) transported for stealing - married Harry DIXON abt 1825 Liverpool, England.

That one with parents Harry & Catherine.

This death:

9474/1909 DIXON EDWARD HENRY CATHERINE GULGONG

How lost are you? Need a summary ? :)

Dave

Hello crankypants,

A summary:

Margaret MENZIES b. abt 1835 - parents James & Euphemia *** James formerly of Bristol

Edward DIXON b. abt 1831 - parents William & Mary *** William possibly of Cumberland

married in 1859 Paterson, NSW

When did they arrive and can you find them in 1841 & 1851?

Is it Euphemia VERNON or Mary VERNON or ???

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

I'm betting that is a brother and it's Euphemia VERNON born in Scotland.

Also, I noted Margaret has a brother John. If he is the one who married Sarah DIXON then the next two questions are:

Is there any connection between Edward and Sarah DIXON?

Is the Sarah who married John the one who arrived alone in 1858?

Regards,

Dave

Hello cranlypants,

Possibility it's William DIXON & Mary BANKS.

Edward c. 3 OCT 1830 Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England

Sarah Anne c. 24 MAY 1835 Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England

If so it would rule out the Sarah Ann who arrived alone from Cheshire.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking.

The dob is within a year so that's ok and place of birth fits. I'd say it's the right family. I don't know when William died. It's expected that Edward would not still be with his grandparents.

Deaths for 8 William DIXONs in Cockermouth 1841-1851.

Deaths for 6 Mary DIXONs in Cockermouth 1841-1851.

Sarah didn't marry until 1865 so it's possible she didn't arrive with elder brother Edward. ???

Edward married in 1859.

I've had no luck yet.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

DIXON Sarah Ann 25 Admiral Lyons 1858 Sydney and/or Newcastle Reel 2138, [4/4795]

I still think it says she is from Cheshire. That means a 2nd one in NSW so can we account for her?

Unassisted to Victoria
