I am trying to find anything about my great grandfather James Mathers. I have found him on the UK census' 1891 aged 48 & 1901 aged 52!! Living in workington, cumberland with his wife Isabella ,son Francis & 2 stepdaughters. census records show that he & his wife were born in ireland, but i dont know where. someone looked at some records for me & said he was the son of moses & catherine Mathers from Magheralin, co Down. & he was baptised in 1853. but i dont know how can they be sure of this when they have no proof? Can anyone help?

Re: miss D.Mathers

Hi Doreen,
I checked the IGI and found a James Mather from Magheralin Co Down ch on7/5/1843 parents Richard and Margaret Mathers. does this seem right? So often census details just list Ireland as a place of birth :( with no county, and it can be really hard. Perhaps family members have a bit of knowledge about where he came from was he in the armed forces at all? if so his records may give his place of birth.
