Missing Donovan Info

This is another ancester I have in my to hard basket, John Michael Donovan born, 01/01/1873 (date may be incorrect). County Cork, Ireland.
Most of what is known about him is oral history such as ;

John's parents owned a hotel in cork. His mother ??? died ???? . His father eventually re married a French woman ???? .
John was put into a Catholic convent to become a priest. He eventually ran away and became a merchant seaman.

I have found a John Donovan who was a spirit dealer who fits in the right time frame who could be his father in the Guys Cork Almanac.
He jumped ship in Sth Aust. in 1911, the following is from a local paper;

DONOVAN John, 23 y, native of IRL.
Deserted SS Bradford City at Port Pirie.
Source: PG 1911 p 164, 173.
[Ship having sailed, warrant withdrawn by PG 5-7-1911]

Would like to find out if he had siblings/step siblings, would also like to go furthe back, I also know this could be difficult or impossible but I'd like to try.
