[I have traced my ancestor AUGUSTUS SPAIN from his birth at CANTERBURY in 1793 to Camberwell then Walworth (1819) to SOUTHOWRAM near HALIFAX Yorks. (1841) with wife MARY nee KING and son WILLIAM b1819 at Walworth then in 1848 his wife MARY died and in 1850 he married a SOUTHOWRAM lady MARY COOPER b 1803. The 1851 census shows him living with his son WILLIAM at SOUTHOWRAM (his 2nd wife MARY is listed at her parents house nearby ) but they can't be traced in the 1861 census ! why ?

have you got a death date (or certificate) for Augustus? It is quite possible that he died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses, he would have been 68 in 1861 which is a ripe old age for that time.
The same reason could account for the absence of his wife and son in the census, neither of them were particularly young at the time.
A possibility for william is millitary service overseas, it may be possible to find some record of him if this is the case, a maritime career could also have caused him to be out of the country at census time, do you know his occupation?
It might be worth looking at ships passenger lists too, as they could indicate if any of the people in question had emigrated.
Hope this helps
Jon

Thank you for responding, I am sorry for the delay due to my gas fired computer and my own lack of IT skills. I have found the death of AUGUSTUS recorded 1870 at Copley near Halifax but nothing further on his second wife MARY. His son WILLIAM is traceable throughout his life but of father AUGUSTUS and stepmother MARY no trace from 1861. regards Terry
