Can anyone solve the mystery of Ezekiel Prescott. We know he was in Liverpool Jail in 1841 and died in Jun 1851 but can find no census record for him in 1851. They are criminal records mentioned about him in 1841 and 1842 but I don't have access to them. Can anyone find a mention of him. He was a boatman on the Liverpool Leeds canal and was born in 1812 in Kirkby Liverpool. I don't know how long he was imprisoned for or what his crime was but judging by some other Prescotts it was probably assault of some kind while drunk. Can anyone find any details about him?

The 1842 trial was on 5 sept at Liverpool Boro sessions.
The charge was House breaking (before court in February) sentence was 10 years transportation. So it he was transported he would not appear on the 1851 census.

The 1841 trial was 10th May Liverpool Boro sessions charged with Larceny, sentence 12 months imprisonment.

EDIT
I noticed the death on FreeBMD in A/M/J 1951, do you have the cert to be certain it was him?

No I don't have certificate for him. Its such a rare combination I had just assumed it was him. Looks like I'll have to look for transportation records.

ThePrescotts are my ancestors not my husbands, they were boatmen and miners, at least 2 ended in jail for assault and grevious bodily harm. I have a possible other an irish ancestor who was in the charge of the Light Brigade. A butcher who had been put on a charge for being drunk. Got out in the morning still drunk and still in his butchers outfit instead of full uniform. He grabbed an officers horse and sword and joined in. He did better than the sober ones and so instead of court martialling they gave him a medal.

Hi Duckweed

Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, May 21, 1841; Issue 1567.

LIVERPOOL BOROUGH SESSIONS
Ezekiel Prescott, 28, for stealing one pair of trousers, the property of Patrick Gilmore, - Twelve months, with hard labour.
-----------------------------------------------------------

TIME versus CRIME, doesn't seem fair when you compare it too Harvey.

cheers

My brother has pointed out another prescott in the 1841 census in Jail at the same time and same place. Is John Prescott Ezekiel's brother? Have we got yet more skeletons in the cupboard? I know Ezekiel had a brother John but it is a very common name and this John is a little older than his brother but ages aren't always correct Ezekiel was not 25 in 1841 either. And then from Lancaster there is William Thompson born 1800. I know its a common name but I have been unable to trace William previously and anyway most of the William Thompsons were related in the Kendal Lancaster area. My William Thompson was a publican from Milnthorpe. Born in Kendal but living in Lancaster area. Another relative also William was a publican in China Lane in Lancaster (a place well known for smugglers)

Blimey DW, there are quite a few Prescotts on the wrong side of the law.

Looks like a family affair. Edward, Henry, John, James, William, Thomas. 1807 - 1813 approx births.

These can't be all yours surely, thats being greedy.:)

Just noticed this and made me laugh...have visions of Patrick Gilmore getting home and saying to his missus in just his underpants....someone nicked me trousers...honest!
