Just about says it really. Looking for the birth of a Alfred Henry Peacock born about 1869. He was brought up in the Trimdon County Durham area with a Matthew and Elizabeth Peacock as his parents. However I can't find his birth and an old story in the family is that he was actually born illegitimately to the daughter of this couple. The story goes that she went to London and sometime after this child appears! Can anyone find him anywhere? I believe the daughter was also called Elizabeth.

Re: Mystery!

I have found Matthew and Elizabeth on the 1871. Albert Henry is not with them.

On the 1881 although listed as married Matthew and Elizabeth are living at separate addresses .
There is a child b 1866 Henry living with Elizabeth (b1819)listed as brother, but the original document has had a lot crossed out on it.
On the 1851 the daughter Elizabeth is living with Matthew and Elizabeth.
I have been unable to find the family on the 1861 census.
It looks like Matthew died in 1888.
There is a possible death for Elizabeth b 1842 in 1883.
I cannot find the family on 1891/1901.
Do you have any more information that would help tracing the family ?

Re: Mystery!

you may not find a birth for him, as it wasnt compulsory to register a birth until 1875 when the law was tightened up. However, you might find a baptism.

do you know IF Alfred had any other siblings?

and where were Matthew and Elizabeth born please?

Re: Mystery!

Hi Julie, Alfred Henry DID marry Emma Kitson. They married abt. 1891 but I'm not sure where. Before that however its very unclear. We have no documents whatsoever about him, only word of mouth stuff passed down. He may have been known by Henry but was always called Alfred by my mothers family. He was my great grandfather. We believed that he was born 1868/69 but lizannes date of 1866 COULD be right.

I have seen Matthew and Elizabeth Peacock' s headstone at Trimdon (who were supposed to be his parents) Matthew died June 8th 1888 so lizannes date was spot on. He died aged 69. His wife Elizabeth died Nov. 10th 1914 aged 96. So they must have been born abt. 1819 & 1818. My mother thinks that Matthews father was called Christopher but she's not 100%. We don't know Elizabeths maiden name.I have no idea where they were born, only that they lived at Trimdon and had some business properties there.

We think that there was another daughter as well as Elizabeth but not too sure about that, her name may have been Margaret but sometimes called Polly. Very sketchy information I know but my mum said that it was always rumoured that he was one of the daughters children but was brought up as a brother.

Re: Mystery!

year 1891

Alfred Henry Peacock
Emma Eliza Kitson

Also Henry Peacock also listed with Emma and Alfred, looks like could be a name correction.

Re: Mystery!

Well I thought at first when I read your post Julie that the Henry you mentioned could be my grandfather, he was called Henry but he wasn't born until 1897.

Re: Mystery!

Thats definitely them, they are my grandads sisters! Thanks Julie.

Just read your earlier post! Wow so Alfred Henry WAS born in the south - looking more and more like the daughters child. My mum is pretty certain that she went away to 'lONDON' or somewhere. Julie can I ask if it says where Emma was born? W ehad heard that she came from Cornwall originally.

Re: Mystery!

Stranger and stranger - Alfred Henry is born Coggeshelon Essex when his supposed parents are in Trimdon and his future wife is born in Coggeshall Essex. I had heard of an Isaac Kitson but my mum was under the impression that he was Emmas brother.
