Hiya and welcome,

do you know when your nan passed? it might be worthwhile actually starting at your nan and working backwards, ie get her death cert, then her marriage cert then we can find her on the census. there is every chance that we can find her parents on the 1901 cens ... but by getting her marriage certificate it will give you her dads name and occupation, which will help pick her out from the others on the census.

Hi Julie,

Thank you for the welcome and the reply,

Morris is her maiden name and clarke is her married name, she was married to andrew clarke, they were married 3rd April 1965 her first name is definitly spelt Marjorie. i cannot find the marriage certificate online.

My nan passed in jan 2003 and i have the details to order her death certificate, i have seen the certificate before as my aunt has it, would it be worth me still getting it?

last night i came accross one of my aunts family trees on Ancetry.co.uk and she had my nans mothers name as Elizabeth A but no further info and no dates of birth, and her siblings were on there and i had not known any of her siblings name so that has helped a great deal but they also had no dates of birth or any other info.

hiya,

firstly, I wouldnt worry too much about the spelling, It could be that whoever registered her birth didnt know which way it was to be spelled.

for example: My gt gran was registered Adaline, yet on her marriage certificates and her death it was spelled Adeline.

likewise for Martin/Martyn

Ann/Anne/Nan/Annie/Hannah/Anna

if you see what I mean.

give me a moment and I'll see if I can find their marriage ref.

(and if you have already seen nans death cert then, it might not be of much use to you, but keep hold of the ref). (not unless your Aunt can give you a copy for your records?) that would save you £7. :)

Ahh I see what you might be thinking,

the ref that Juliejtp found you was her birth ref: the Mothers Maiden name would be Kendall, so, if you DID order the cert using that ref, you should find her name as Elizabeth A. Kendall. (all births after 3rd Q 1911 have the mothers maiden name in the index), this is especially helpful when tracking the births forward, but not so good if you have a common name such as brown/smith obviously.

hmmm I'm a little puzzled,

if she was born in 1918, I would have expected her marriage to have been somewhere around 1939 (I realise that it might not have happened because of WW2), How positive are you that she married for the 1st time in 1965??

Hi thank you so much for your help i so appreciate it:)

i looked into the birth information

Margery AD Morris

Year 1918
Mothers maiden name Kendall
District Edmonton

Vol 3a
Page 955

Apr/May/Jun 1/4

and my mum was born in Edmonton, so far it all ties in so i have the register entry from ancestry and noted down all the detail you have given me so i can order her birth certificate.

As for the marrage part you do have a point as my mum is not the daughter of Andrew clarke she has a different father called alfred mcgee who supposedly died in 1965 i think there are some muddled dates. my mum was born in 1959.

i am really pleased that i have now have the surname of my nans mum.

Todays research has resulted in a residency record i have found for a Alfred Mcgee (my mums father) all i have is his name and year of death 1965 when i searched ancestry and found the residency record for a alfred mcgee residing in edmonton (where my mum was born and my nan who we have been looking at was born) this is the only record i can find for him tried searching to find his birth or death certificate no luck.

what i can i check to get some confirmation that this is my grandfather?
it would be great if it was as there are names of his parents and siblings with this record.

Year 1965

The next step would be to find the marriage certificate. Did your mum have any siblings from this marriage and if so when was the eldest born, then we can work around that date.

Hi Thank you for this response very helpful,
The only sibling you have on here that i did not have a note of is Lawrence S Morris. The other siblings are Irene Morris, Len Morris, Lorrie Morris, Violet Morris, P Morris (uncertain).

The Marriage for Elizabeth H Kendall to william H Morris may not be the right one as i have her name down as Elizabeth Alice Kendall?

This is so exciting i cannot believe i am actually getting somewhere with this. thank you so much for your help:)

One of the childrens birth certificates will prove what the mothers name was (as well as the fathers). Once you are armed with that then, you/we can look for a marriage and then possibly get back to the 1901 census.
