New Project in Aid of Armed Forces

Hi All,

Along with my Mother in Law i have started on a new project in researching the local war memorial in Congleton, Cheshire. The research will be published over 2 books and the proceeds will be going to a Forces Charity in aid of service personnel returning from active service abroad.
I would like some help from the forum members if they are going abroad on holiday or on business. I require for the project photos of headstones and memorials of the casualties named on the Congleton war memorial. The bulk of the casualties are in the Middle East but i also have some in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Turkey, Austria, Iceland, and Malta. If anyone can help with getting photos in any of these countries please can you contact me on this thread.
I will also be sending information on the various casualties to their Regimental Museums for their records so should family or military historians ask for information on that person including any photos of them i have.
Any help with this project would be very much appreciated.

Hoping the book on WW1 to be out for the 99th Anniversary of the end of that war. A copy will be given to the local family history society and the books will be sold through the charities shop so they get the full profits for it.

Hi Dave,

No problem on posting a list of the cemeteries where i have casualties listed in. I have casualties from both wars but will put them together in countries.
There will be a set of 5 books in all, one on ww1 casualties, one on ww2 casualties, one on 'those others that also served and came home, one on the Home Guard, and one on war workers such as Land Girls and factory workers from the town of Congleton in Cheshire.
Where would you like e to list the cemeteries and casualties? I can start a new thread or i can post them on this thread.
Any help would be appreciated with the first two books.

Okay i'll post them on here over the next few days. It will take me a couple of sittings to do them and i'll get a copy off to you with whatever else you would like.
I have been lucky enough to find someone who has done all the memorials and cemeteries in the far east. One of the problems i have with one of the casualties that is listed on the memorial in Congleton is, he was a prisoner of war of the Japanese and just after the war ended his wife recieved a letter from him saying he was fine and would soon be on his way home. Nothing was ever heard from him again. He is listed on the memorial but is not listed on the CWGC website.

Know it seems a bit of a daft question Sniper but do you use photos already on sites....maybe what other people have used.
Must be a few that could be googled

Or is it a case of wanting to get new pics at source so to speak.

I do prefer to use fresh photos rather than photos from other sources though if i need to i will seek permission of the owner to use information.

Thats ok Leefer, i know its not an overnight project and none of them are going anywhere. Just put that up to let everyone know its been promised. Over the next couple of nights i will be listing the WW1 casualties on the WW1 forum. Many more of these to get but thankfully not so spread out as WW2. Do we have any members in Israel?

What sort of information do you need to do a full editorial for the main website. I have listed all the cemeteries on the forum and have a spreadsheet on excel with full details of the casualties. I have been lucky enough to recruit a guy who does battlefield tours on the Western Front who is going to take as many in Belgium as he can get for me.
It would be very much appreciated if you could do whatever you can to help the project.

Hi Lee,

Most memorials are divided into panels and each panel can be sub-divided into three, top, middle and bottom. When i do a memorial i take one of each part of the panel so your sure to get a good photo of each name, provided you have your camera correctly set of course.
I am heading down to Runnymeade RAF Memorial next weekend and will be taking photos of all the panels so if any of our members find they need any photos for their family research they will be available to them.

Good man....that is in Egham i believe....anyway Mike i am hoping to be on the go soon.....Plymouth where you need plenty is a possibility in the next couple of weeks....does you going to Runnymead mean i can knock that of the list?

Also i note one in Plymouth for WW1.....could you maybe put the UK names up for me on the other thread......as i can grab them all if i am there.
Incidently my Grandads brother was laid to rest in Ramleigh Israel...love to visit him one day.

Hi Lee,

I will post the names up for you this evening. I will start with the two you have mentioned, the one in Wales and the ones in Plymouth.

I do have been to the Runnymeade memorial before and from the top of it you can see Heathrow Airport from there. Its certainly a very peaceful place with just the odd aircraft flying over. It lists all bomber crews from all Commonwealth countries who were lost and have no known grave in the European War Theatre.
