Newspaper Cutting

Hi everyone, I found this newspaper cutting with some old photo's. My mothers maiden name was Nellie Welsby. Her parents were Leonard and Sarah Jane Welsby and Sarah Jane's maiden name was Morris. They married in 1911 and her father was a Joseph Morris and on the marriage certificate he was a collier. Morris is such a common name and have had trouble finding which Morris is which. I wonder if anyone can help me find out who this man is and is he part of my family. I have attached the file of the scanned image of his obituary, date unknown.

I can't see his death with ages in the index that don't seem to fit.

I can see three possible births in Oswestry Registration District but I don't have access to the full census.

Do you have the date of the newspaper cutting?

It says Joseph was 63 when war broke out(1939) - b c 1876. He served to the end of the war (1945). He died aged 68+ , implying death was circa 1945. I find no matching entry for a death of a Joseph Morris on Free BMD 1945-50. I have also looked at Morris deaths at Farnworth, in case he was registered in a different first name, but nothing obvious comes up. I think you should approach stated age with caution.

Have you looked to see if Joseph's First World War service records have survived? They might give some family details.

Have you found Sarah Jane Morris/Welsby in 1901/1911? Do you know her parents names?

As a complete shot in the dark, in 1881 there is a Joseph Morris, aged 3, living with parents, Joseph, coal miner, and Mary J, in St Martins, Oswestry.

I think his age when war broke out refers to WW1??

If these census are correct Joseph's daughter Sarah Jane was born abt 1882.

Sarah Jane Morris & Leonard Welsby married June Qtr 1911 Bolton, though on separate census they would have to be in the same area.

As to Joseph's death keep in mind he liked to change his age!!!
and checking deaths only in Farnworth which start at 1935.

I think the death of Joseph Morris is in 1921 as report says he was born over 68 years ago in near Oswestry.
The nearest death near Bolton I can find is Mar 1921 Bolton 8C 338, this puts his birth at 1853 near the 1851 given the 63 years at outbreak of war.

Thanks Dave and others. I have attached Leonard and Sarah Jane's marriage certificate if that helps. Sarah Jane Morris's mothers name was Jane Williams and I thinks she was born in 1852. Her Joseph I think was born in 1853. Again I am unsure of the birth dates. I have been unable to get very far with there being so many Joseph Morris's. Have got no where with military sites either as his name doesn't arise. I found some military files but don't know if they relate to my newspaper Joseph. Appreciate all you are doing.
