Hello

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place -but wonder if anyone can help . How common is it to have mistakes made on Marriage certificates ? Is it possible that the father of the brides occupation could have been written down wrong ,trying to figure out if Flour Miller or Shoe Maker could have been misheard .

Thank you

Dolly

Hi Dolly I have not come across a mistake like that on a cert, but I am sure they happen  people sometimes made their occupations sound grander than they really were, but that is not the case here, and ages were very often wrong - but people did not always know their true age or for some reason changed it, perhaps they just misheard but it is difficult to mishear those occupations I would have thought.

Hi Dolly is it possible to get their marriage cert? I know they may have changed their occupation but if they are flour millers or shoemakers the chances are they kept that trade. Could you look at one of their children's birth cert? that may help too and also the census.

Hi pejay

I don't have the marriage cert for Mary Ellen Mansells parents ,I've been trying to find a birth for Mary Ellen ,the problem is on Mary Ellens own marriage in 1890 ,her father is down as William Mansell occupation flour miller .However I can find no census at all with said William as a flour miller, only one as a shoe maker .I agree with julie the Shropshire family does seem to be them ,even though Mary Ellen gives place of birth as Lancashire on the 1891 census .I hope that you can follow this ,there is for some reason conflicting information on this family ie-shoe maker ,flour miller and Shropshire or Lancashire !

Thanks for looking again

Dolly

Hi Dolly, can you find Mary Ellen on another census? she must have been around in 1881 or even 1871 I have had a quick look but am not coming up with anything at all. I do not know which county they lived in? where did Mary Ellen marry? we could perhaps work backwards from there.who did Mary Ellen marry?
Is it possible to try to get William's marriage cert?

Hi pejay

Mary Ellen Mansell married Robert Lees in 1890 in Ashton under Lyne ,her age at marriage is 29 ,I have the family on 1891, 1901 census living in Ashton under Lyne, where I know for definite Robert was born .Mary Ellen gives the same place of birth but nothing is turning up for her . The only other thing I know about her is her fathers name re William Mansell flour miller .I can't find Mary Ellen on any census at all before her marriage ,the only other possibility is that she was giving wrong place of birth on 1891 ,1901 . By not being able to find her at the moment ,I am missing out a whole line in my family history .

Several reasons why you might not find Mary Mansell in census records before marriage, the name could be horribly mispelled, try putting in her first name and age and place of birth and searching, the age on the census could be wrong so its not flagging up, sometimes people lied about their age especially if there was a big age gap, sometimes they just weren't sure what age they were, birthplace could be in smaller village near Ashton under Lyme but in registration district so not always the same birthplace put down, try other villages in Ashton district.
