Oh dear
I have been trying to find out why my grt x 3 grandfather Edward Brown was in the clarkenwell goal 1851. It appears old Eddie made a career out of hopping in and out of various HMPs. He keeps commiting theft. With help i have found out from 1845-1855 ? he has been a busy boy. How sad for his family they must have been destitute at times.

Indeed Sue...................times were hard so theres always the chance that many people in prison were there out of pure hunger...though your man must have had a big appetite with the years he spent inside!

I love reading about the different areas of London and try and imagine them when they were places of there own..rather than as now all joined together as London...didnt know that the Italians were there in force at one point....must have been the good old fashioned English cuisine that attracted them!

Hey im surprised im not out ducking and diving and wheeling and dealing boys, still this is the reason my grans very posh older sister stopped researching the family tree in the early 1920s. I think its great myself.

Hi Sue, did you have a look on the old baileys court link? There is a Edward Brown sentenced on the 3 March 1851 for one month for stealing, i assume this is your fella, if so obviously the census was done within that month of his sentence hence him been on it for Clarkenwell prison. Do you know when your Edward was born, this chap was 46 in 1851. One month sentence was pretty light back then considering some i have read about.
So gran's older sister wasnt impressed with the ancesters:biggrin: I find it all intruiging and like finding out a little about what they were like etc.

yep Edward was born 1805-7 lyndhurst, hampshire. Strange thing is he names my grt x2 grandfather Colextor. Apart from 1851 census and his eldest sons birth certificate the name colextor is untraceable. i have tried every site possible to the Geneology phreterinty ( have i spelt this right ). This is a strange family. Yes also it was eddie boy 1851. He stole some carpentry tools another time as this was his occupation. I suppose you have to look at it if he stole someones tools, then that was also someone elses livelyhood.

Clarkenwell is near islington and farringdon which is handy for the metropolitan archives on occations.

In past times country people(lymington) would spell as they heard alot of the time.
Colextor......could have been Collister Sue.
All my Dads family were from Southampton and worked on the land and often words were spelt as they sounded.
Is there any Collisters in the family?

That reminded me of the army records i was reading once and it had stated that the fella had a SAW arm.
