hi everyone
i am looking for the parents of my great great grandmother - mary o'neill who married william kirkland and ended up here in new zealand, I believe she came from Dundee, Angus, Scotland, she was born in 1852 - her father may of been a Francis O'Neill and mother might of been Christina Fraser - she may of had a brother Owen and a sister Rose - thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this post

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

So far I can't find a marriage for Francis to Christina/Christian in Scotland.

So far I can't find a birth or baptism for Mary, Rose or Owen in Scotland.

Dave

do i have to buy the marriage certificate dave ?
im not sure what some of the info is that you are giving me
RC (what does this mean ?)
O'NIELL FRANCIS
FRAZER CHRISTINA
13/5/1849 (is this the date of the marriage ?)
DUNDEE, ST ANDREW'S

i think a lot of the O'neill information has been muddled to be honest

RC = Roman Catholic.

Yes, that's the date of the marriage.

ScotlandsPeople lets you search for free once you register but to get copies of certificates you need to buy credits. Not essential. Depends to what depth you need the details.

Yes, that's the date of the marriage.

With a name like O'Neill it will appear in records with variations.

I have no access to census in Scotland after 1851.

Given the ages in that 1871 census I'll look for births and a death.

Births after 1854 do not list parents on the index.

I can't find births for Mary or Rose. Either the age for Owen in 1871 is wrong or they had a second son named Owen. I'll look for a death.

I can't find a death for Owen born 1854.

i wonder if Mary and Rose had a different mother - perhaps Ellen ??

The marriage was 1849. The births are before Christina's death.

Not all births were registered and not all records of those that were registered have survived. Or the record survived but is in such a poor condition it can't be transcribed to the index.

it is looking more likely that Francis was Mary's father and Christina her mother
Mary did name her first son Samuel Francis Murray Kirkland
the Samuel was after William Kirkland father, so perhaps the Francis Murray was after Mary's father
