Oscar Lawrence Pearman (also spelt Pearmain) was born in 1852 at Shoreditch (Birth Certificate), in 1899 his daughter had him on her Marriage certificate as "Deceased" but thanks to Emeltee on this board I now have his death certificate and he died in 1940 at Coulsdon, Surrey, his home address is given as 124 Camberwell Road SE5.
The informant is N. Stoner, Daughter. I have not found a daughter for him with the first-name beginning with N, nor a Pearman/Stoner marriage. So am now working backwards and would greatly appreciate any info from the 1901 (or 1911?) census on Oscars whereabouts please?
Thanks for any replies.

Thanks for that Dave. :)
Still no sign of the vanishing Oscar!
Yes I have the 1881 Census for him. That's the last thing I have until his death in 1940.
Now I am puzzled by Chas Pearman so will have to follow that up. Nellie on there is presumably Oscars granddaughter and looks like she could be the informant on the Death Certificate entered as his daughter?

1901
Name: Annie Pearman
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1879
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Charles T Pearman
Mother's Name: Mary Pearman
Gender: Female
Where born: Newington, London, England

Civil parish: Camberwell
Ecclesiastical parish: St Giles
County/Island: London
Country: England

Registration district: Camberwell
Sub-registration district: Camberwell
ED, institution, or vessel: 10
Household schedule number: 123

Charles T Pearman 50 Shoreditch, Carman
Mary Pearman 42 Newington, Pickler
Annie Pearman 22 Newington
Willie Pearman 12 Newington

I am not sure Annie is 22, it could be 23 or even 24
I think Willie is Nellie as they had 4 children
and we have four, Mariah, Annie, George and Nellie,

I think for whatever reason Oscar changed his name. Can't be as he was playing away as he was always with Mary, so perhaps he had been in trouble of some sort.

Hi Dave
please excuse my ignorance but how does nellie pratt become nellie Pearman!

Confused
peter
Hi
good question....
You are missing info from the 1911 census where Nellie Pearman is married to a Pratt. Living with them is Charles...
Witness on Oscars death cert is a N Stoner. So in 1914 we have Nellie Stoner formerly Pratt, nee Pearman

'Simple'

EDIT - I hadn't checked out the Pratt marriage, but here it is
Nellie Pearmain to George Henry Pratt, A/J 1909 Holborn 1b 1204

EDIT 2 - Just checked on Children, additional to Nellie b 1910 Camberwell, is
Mary E A Pratt O/D 1911 Camberwell and
Winifred V J Stoner O/D 1914 Southwark

Thanks for the explanation Dave.
I was beggining to think I had missed out on something!
There seem to be lots of extra tricks to genealogy that I have not mastered yet!
Only the other day did it sink in that the census had already been transcribed by the enumerator into books. So that is an extra link that can go wrong as I expect most people were not the best at hand writing(as now)
Still all grist to the mill as they used to say!

Thanks again.
Peter

Oscar Lawrence Pearman/Pearmain - in 1899 his daughter had him on her Marriage certificate as "Deceased" .
Hi
Which daughter was this? Maria?. It seems strange that she said Oscar was deceased. Was this all to do with why Oscar changed his Name and had she disowned him? I wonder if there are any newspaper items between 1881 and 1891. Hopefully someone with access may pick up on this and have a look for you.

Blimey Dave, you must have a Masters in genealogy! Many thanks. :)
Yes, it was Maria Jane Pearmain, his daughter, who had Oscar as Deceased when she got married in 1899. 5 months later had her first child. Maybe Oscar had the huff about that?
Couldn't work out how Charles was Oscars brother, but you have done a Piroit on it, well done!

Hi
Oscar was called Charles on 1891 census, well before Maria had her baby.
Are you saying Charles was Oscars brother? I have not found the 1871 census yet, but he didn't have a brother Charles T on the 1861 census. I think Oscar and Charles are the same person.

But - but - but -
Just to throw a spanner in the works!

If Annie was born 1877 or 1879 by Charles and Mary, Oscar had, by his 1st (?) wife, also Mary (Weston), Maria Jane in 1877 and Annie Laurie in 1878. Not impossible but as a Coal Porter/Stevedore/Builders Labourer it would be difficult to keep two families on the go financially?
Also found:
Marriage, Charles Webley Pearman and Mary Francis Herbert.
Dec 1879 Camberwell Vol.1d. P.1157.

Just trying to get my little grey cells to grasp it! I suppose if Oscar separated from Mary Weston after Annie Laurie was born that would explain it and Annie (second one) was born 1879, yet the 1881 Census shows different for Oscar.

So far I have not found Charles Webley Pearman on the 1881 Census, but Oscar is with Mary Weston and their 2 children in Lambeth.

Anyone got a time machine and I will go back and ask Oscar what he was doing!

Hi
The crossing out refered to by P.Risboy (Steve) , I think was Annie overwritten with Charles.

I think all the children are to one set of parents, Oscar and Mary. I don't think there are two Mary's nor two Annies. All the dates and birthplaces match, and on the last census Charles has written he had 4 children, (Maria, Annie, George and Nellie)

I found Oscars parents on 1871, down as Harry Pearmain 50, Long Melford, Suffolk, Jane 50 and Harry 15, but not Oscar..

You are correct Dave. The ages tie in. The fact that Maria is on the 1891 Census with Charles but not the 1901 Census ties in with her marriage in 1899.
This now raises what are probably unanswerable questions for me!
Why did Oscar change his name to Charles?
Why did Maria put him on her Marriage Certificate as dead when it seems she knew he was alive?
As he used the name Charles for so long, why did Nellie record his death (Correctly) as Oscar?

I wonder if there is a Police "most Wanted" list from the late 1880s? Also, one of Maria's sons became a Chief Superintendent of Police, that must have been interesting if his granddad was on the lamb!

Question please.
The 1891 Census entry quoted has:
Registration district: St Saviour Southwark
Sub-registration district: St Peter Walworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 37

Does Institution or Vessel imply they were in a Workhouse?
