Does this mean they had a employment contract type thing with the mine before they even left England?:confused:

Yes. ;)

The same thing was still happening even as recently as 40 years ago. Tasmanian govt would bring concrete workers from Spain and miners from Italy to work on construction projects.

Thanks Dave. Thats interesting.

More miners being required the company through its London agents, engaged a number of men from the mining districts of Cornwall, defraying their passages to the colony under agreement. In this manner over 200 men, with their families, arrived at the mine in 1872-73.

The Ford's i've been looking into where on the Landsborough.
