Anyone know when Passports started or became compulsory in Australia
I would have thought about 1900 -1914
I have a small photo of my great-grandfather
The family thinks it was a passport photo but he died in 1895
He came out to Aus sometime between 1851 and 1883

Bushy is there anything written on the back of the photo like a business name or something?

Wanted....Dead or Alive:biggrin:

Photos were made in all different forms back then Bushy,it is just coincidental that it looks like a passport photo....why dont you post it so we can see?:)

I don't have the original but my copy has been enlarged some 200%
I don't know of any writing on the back sorry

I have several old family photos that are of passport size so I'd say it's impossible from looking at the front if it's a Passport or ID Paper photo or not. That's why the back is of interest.

Most probably not a passport photo.
Early film was made in various sizes from 15 to 75 mm.
Early photographs were made the same size as the negative using the contact print system.
If a small negative (film) was used a small photograph was the result.
Cheers
Guy
