I am very new to this and Im trying to find some information on my mother. As i have no living relative left its proving hard.
If any one can help me i would greatly appreciate this.

I know that she was born 16/8/1931 and lived in Alperton (Wembley) London. untill she was about 20 yrs. Her fathers name was John Sawyer and owned an Jewlers shop on Alperton high street.
Would like to find out my grandmothers name also.

The next step would be to purchase her birth certificate to confirm mother and fathers name. Then to purchase her parents marriage certificate which will give their fathers names, occ and family address.

Welcome to FHUK and hope you enjoy it here, Should you want to purchase your mothers birth certificate online from the General Register Office (GRO) then this is the link to use:

General Register Office Certificates

Once you have your mothers b/cert then you can look towards getting her parents marriage certificate, and then you are able to look in the 1901 census to find their parents and any siblings that they might have.

Once you get back to the 1901 census, you can then travel backwards in 10 year segments to 1841 it is an exciting thing to undertake, and very very addictive!!!

I am doing pay as you go on Ancestry.
Well juliejtp kindly gave me the details earlier but when i do a search for Patricia MJ Sawyer DOB 1931 in London i get lists and lists of names starting from 1890s why wont it just show me 1931 only and narrow down my search??

if you click on Julies link to ancestry, it takes you to the main home page,

if you look below the "search" button you will see

"Go Directly to Births Marriages and Deaths"

if you click on that and enter what you know..

ie you know she was born in August so she will be registered SEPT Quarter.

A year is broken into 4 quarters

Q1=Jan/feb/mar
Q2=April/may/june
Q3=July/aug/sept
Q4=Oct/nov/dec

the partial one is from FreeBMD (and that is free to use) BUT it isnt complete,

we all start somewhere, but if you get stuck, shout up and someone will come and help you, never be afraid to ask for help, before you know it you will be rattling round the indexes like a fire!!

I guess it a case of going back over each year and each quarter untill i find it? Meaning i go back each year from my mothers birth?

Not a silly question at all,

once you have you grandmothers full name (and any married names as well as maiden) you will have the basis to do a search. Usually I would begin by looking 5 years before the birth of the child (as they usually married at 21 and began producing children as soon as)

you would then search the complete indexes like you did for your mums birth, but it would be the marriage one (if you did a quick search on FreeBMD first this could bring up the marriage without having to spend money on PPV for Ancestry)

if you spend the time now, making the connections and then buying the certificates to prove the findings then you can be fairly confident that you will be tracking the right line

I am waiting for my mothers birth certificate to come then i can really get the ball rolling. Im just a bit impatient:redface: to find out about my grandparents.

Like i said im very new to all of this but ive certainly been bitten by the genealogy bug.

No worries Joe,

we were all new to the bug at some point, like I have said everyone starts somewhere.

I was fairly lucky with my maternal gran etc as she was born in 1891 and I already knew a little bit about her (as well as her mothers name, and her mothers name) so I had grandmother, gt grandmother, and gt gt grandmother, I just didnt have any certs or any "flesh" on the bones. I was just unfortunate as both gt gran and gt gt gran died at at young ages... 46 and 48, so didnt really have alot to work on, but time and effort has paid off, and I'm now fairly confident that I have quite abit of info/certs on the women of my maternal line.

I have near on 100 certs (might even be more ) and still havent got all the ones I need, but it isnt a rush job, and they are long gone so won't hurt if they have to wait abit longer... haha..

Wow you have done very well, I hope I can do the same.

I am slowly getting to understand how Geneaology.co.uk search's work ha ha:2fun: . But i did find some interesting things out yesterday.
I remember my mother told me that my grandfather ran or owned a hairdressers in Alperton Wembley London, so armed with this information i searched phone books of london from 1930 onwards and low and behold i found a
W G Sawyer Hairdressers 186 Ealing Road London Wembley, it appears in the phone book from 1930 untill 1953 when W G Sawyer moves to
266A Regents Park RD N3.

I do belive this is my grandfather as its the only Sawyer in Wembley area and I know that my mother was brought up in Wembley from 1931.

Is there anyway of finding out details of 186 Ealing RD and the hairdressers Photos or anything?
