I'd like a look up please for the PEAT family in Lanark in 1861:

Andrew b. ?
Margaret b. 1840-1848 Father Charles mother ?

Margaret Shedden Spouse: Andrew PEAT
Marriage: 18 Feb 1861 Lanark, Lanark, Scotland

That's all I have found so far, sorry. The IGI entry gives no parents and no birth/baptism date for either.

I believe Andrew died before 21 Jul 1871.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

Yes, I have looked. I can't find a Charles born about 1802 that fits.

Margaret's father Charles was born about 1802. The inscription reads:
The Tombstone of George West and Grace Horn Temple Midlothian in Edinburgh.
Erected by G & J WEST
CHARLES SHEDDON father in law of the above J. WEST died 9th April 1880 aged 78 years.

I may as well continue here. I said Andrew probably died before 21 Jul 1871 because Margaret remarried.
It was all very confusing because in records she apppears as Margaret PEAT, Margaret Peat Sheddon, Margaret SHEDDEN, Margaret SHEDDON, Margaret Shedden WEST...

1 1871 WEST JOSEPH PEAT MARGARET ST ANDREW EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/02 0199
2 1871 WEST JOSEPH SHEDDEN MARGARET ST ANDREW EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/02 0199

I wonder if Margaret is still living with her father in 1871?
Perhaps a search for Charles in Edinburgh might find Margaret's mother's name.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

A possibility for 1871.

Civil parish Stobhill
County Midlothian

Charles Shaden age 70 occ grocer born Clackmannen
Margaret Peal age 29 born Lasswade
William Peal age 9 great granchild born Cockpen Edinburgh
Anne Peal age 7 great granchild born Newbattle Edinburgh

An alternative name of Shaden has been submitted for Margaret not Sheddon.

What do you think? :)

Hello juliejtp,

Thank you very much. I would say you have solved it. I'll explain how things fit with this marriage:

Margaret Shedden Spouse: Andrew PEAT
Marriage: 18 Feb 1861 Lanark, Lanark, Scotland
Batch: M116481

Margaret is married and living with her father as I had thought. They had two children as per the 1871 Stobhill, William and Anne. I'd say the 'Peal' is 'Peat'. Stobhill fits in perfectly with the WEST family and Margaret's second marriage on 21 Jul 1871 St Andrew Edinburgh to Joseph WEST.

CHARLES SHEDDON father in law of the above J. WEST died 9th April 1880 aged 78 years.
So it should say grandchild not great grandchild.

The 1841 Census does not mention relationships but there is a PENTLAND, a younger sister of Ann probably. Yes, 1851 says sister-in-law.

The only bit I don't have now is where Charles was born. One says Clackmannen and another says Glendevon, Perthshire. That's about 20 km. I still can't find his birth about 1802.

Regards,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

Please see if you can find the following family in 1841 and 1851 in Midlothian. I have managed to find some of Margaret's siblings.

Charles SHEDDEN/SHEDDON b. abt 1800 (Glendevon) so probably Perthshire or Clackmannan
spouse Anne b. abt 1800 probably Midlothian
Charles b. 1835 Midlothian
Anne b. 1837 Midlothian

Margaret b. 1840 - 1848 ? Midlothian
William b. abt 1844 Midlothian

Thanks,

Dave

Hello juliejtp,

I'm sorry but I've done it again. Please ignore my last request. Of course I already have Charles in 1841 and 1851 because that's where I got the different places for his birth. I have stuff in text files not yet entered into the database.

I've made no progress with his birth or that of spouse Ann PENTLAND.

Regards,

Dave
