Hi Dave

There is a tree suggesting Jessie is Janet (Jessie) Ritchie, parents: Peter Ritchie and Margaret Connor.

Also NSW BMD:
94/1876 - WIGHTMAN JAMES - RITCHIE JESSIE - SYDNEY
Confirms your Sydney Morning Herald entry.

The tree also suggests that peter died; Mitchell's Island, Manning River, aged 48, giving a birth year of c1830.
Reg No Last Name Given Name Mother's Given Name(s) District
7103/1878 RITCHIE PETER - JESSIE - MANNING RIVER

If you haven't got Kate and Mary Ann's marriages:
5134/1883 LOTEN ERNEST G - RITCHIE KATE - WINGHAM
6003/1894 POWELL REVNOTON S E - RITCHIE MARY - PETERSHAM

Not sure if you have Susannah's marriage..
3715/1879 DOBBINS ISAAC - RITCHIE SUSANNAH - MANNING RIVER

Peter's mother could be a Jessie (Janet) b. c1810 NSW.. Though it did give Jessie as mother, at Peter's death.

There is also this birth under Richie :
8897/1863 RICHIE JOHN - PETER - MARGARET - MANNING RIVER

Hello Geoff,

Thanks for filling in some of the gaps. I didn't chase all the children re marriages and deaths because I was not sure if they really fitted or not in my tree.

Yass and Manning River are hundreds of miles apart so I kept wondering if there were 2x Peter. Seems not.

Presbyterian and therefore not uncommon for the Janet/Jessie bit. The following one in Sydney (I can tell by the minister) is also Presbyterian but not establishment - more a 'no questions asked' sort of place.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 3 February 1876 p.1
MARRIAGES
WIGHTMAN - RITCHIE.-January 28, by the Rev. Dr. Fullerton, Mr. James Wightman, of Sydney, to Jessie, eldest daughter of Mr. Peter Ritchie, of Manning River.
Janet born 1851 certainly fits as the eldest daughter.

The connection to my tree is actually Reburton POWELL.

Can find birth registrations for some of the children.

Regards,

Dave

There were times when I was suspicious of 2 separate families, but mostly the info is reasonably consistent.

There is a death for a William Ritchie:
V18542181 41A/1854 RITCHIE WILLIAM AGE 62

The same year as William was bap.

Thanks Geoff.

It looks like one Peter and a move much further north for the family.

I did follow the minister. :) A CofE burial too.

Burials in the Parish of St. Clement Yass in the County of Murray in the year 1854
No 12 William Ritchie Abode: Yass When Died: October 26th When Buried: October 28th Age: 62 years Quality or Profession: Presbyterian Clergyman By whom the Ceremony was performed: Chas. Ferd. Brigstocke

Hi Dave

No, in fact it only has Janet (Jessie) 1851-1945, with no evidential info, though the limited info it states has been fairly consistent. So they have done a little homework. It appears to be the only tree that has Peter and Margaret.

The other children that I found, apart from those mentioned by you, were found by trawling the index for Ritchie and Richie, filtering with parents to reduce results.

I doubt outside NSW. Can't see any in Qld. or Vic.

No age at death for Mary.

A big gap 1854 (RC Yass) to 1863 Manning River.

6003/1894 POWELL REVNOTON S E - RITCHIE MARY - PETERSHAM

28 Mar 1894 in Wesleyan Methodist Church

Can't find a notice in TROVE for that one.

Hi Guys,

It might be my tree you have been looking at. I have spent a lot of time chasing the information in it so it is all sourced. I will get around to adding sources. Jessie (Janet) is my wife's GG. She married James Robert Wightman in 1876 in Sydney. They lived in Balranald NSW for a while and had 5 children. The family packed up and moved to Kalgoorlie WA, not sure when but the electoral roles from 1906 on have them in it, along with my wife's grandmother Myrtle Wightman and her brother James. Look under district of Bardoc. Eventually they moved to Perth and lived in Subiaco. He died in 1914. Trove has the details. He was much older. When they married he was 48 and she was 23. She died in 1945. Apparently she was a real tyrant.

I have been chasing a starting point to further research Peter Ritchie. He certainly moved to Manning River (Taree.) His wife Margaret was a famine orphan who arrived in 1849 from Listowel, Ireland. She died in Sydney in 1874. You have given me the clue on where to start with Peter Ritchie by saying he was a mounted policeman. I thought that was the case because I had found information showing that in 1849 in Sydney. A whole unit moved from Sydney to Yass. Prior to that he was a soldier with the 99th Regiment which appears to be a British regiment that he joined in 1842. I assume he came out with it. I will chase this now. Most of this stuff can be googled.

Brian.

Dave

Fyi I checked out the minister Rev William Ritchie and can see no connection between Peter and William other than he married them and baptised the first 2 kids. William died in 1854. He had a son Peter B Ritchie who died in 1878 I think. There were quite a few of the family with similar names to our Peter Rotcjie's family. Google Rev William Ritchie West Linton. The whole story will come up. He was a missionary from Scotland, arrived 1847. You will need to highlight the page to read it.

Hello Brian,

Yes, thanks, I did chase more info on the minister out of curiosity.

I think it will be very difficult finding on which of the three convict vessels Peter arrived.

It's just a small branch on my tree with the connection via Reburton & Mary Ann.

Can you confirm there are no registrations for three of the children:

Kate
Mary Ann
Susannah

Dave

Dave,

Only Susanna May. 24292/1888 NSW. Others don't seem to be registered. Kate lived in Wingham I think. Might be a clue there.

Susanna is shown on the Mid North Coast Pioneers site. Parents are Alezander and Charlotte.

Peter is also there - shown 1827 as estimated birth date. Wonder where they got that from. This co-incides with English census 1841 where it is shown as 1826 - Cumberland army barracks. May not be him but a fair chance. Shows birth as Scottish. I might chase his death certificate. Marriage cert shows nothing but names.

I chased the convict ships Candahar, North Briton and John Renwick - zero.

Brian.
