Possible 1851:

Betsey Petherbridge
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1803
Relation: Head

Civil Parish: Brixham
Ecclesiastical parish: Lower Brixham
County/Island: Devon
Registration district: Totnes
Sub-registration district: Paington
ED, institution, or vessel: 2f
Household schedule number: 47

Name Age
Betsey Petherbridge 48
John Petherbridge 19
Elizth Petherbridge 15
Mary Petherbridge 13

Betsey was a Bread Baker and says she was a widow and John was a Mariner.

Found this but the age doesn't match:

Baptism Place: Brixham,Devon,England
Father: Henry Petherbridge
Mother: Elizabeth

Something a bit odd 1851:

Name: Henry Petherbridge
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1822
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Petherbridge
Gender: Male
Where born: Brixham, Devon, England
Civil Parish: Brixham
Ecclesiastical parish: Lower Brixham
Registration district: Totnes
Sub-registration district: Paington
ED, institution, or vessel: 2g
Household schedule number: 113
Piece: 1873
Folio: 336
Page Number: 24

Henry Petherbridge 29
Mary Petherbridge 28

This looks like the same couple in 1861/71/81 but as you see the DOB is different, it has been transcribed correctly and Henry was a fisherman.

Amanda

I cn find two baptisms for a Henry Petherbridge in Brixham

Henry 1803 son of Thomas and Mary bapt St Mary
Henry 1819 son of Christopher and Susanna Weslyan Methodist
also a John Henry baptised 1821 Thomas and Agnes St Mary.

I think that the Henry 1819 is possibly the one you have found in the Census.

But this could be Henry, son of Christopher and Susanna in 1851:

Name: Henry Petherbridge
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1819
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Sarah Petherbridge
Gender: Male
Where born: Brixham, Devon, England
Civil Parish: Ramsgate
Ecclesiastical parish: St George
Town: Ramsgate
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Registration district: Thanet
Sub-registration district: Ramsgate
ED, institution, or vessel: 3g
Piece: 1630
Folio: 372
Page Number: 25

Henry Petherbridge 32
Sarah Petherbridge 34
Louisa Carle 18

This Henry was a tailor, and the other one in 1851 was a fisherman

Amanda

Allowing for stretching the truth with the birth year, it could be Henry, son of Henry Petheridge and Elizabeth Perrim who was baptised 1826.

Emeltee

Interestingly, while Henry was married to Sarah he was a tailor clothier. In subsequent census without Sarah, he is a Smack owner

Amanda

Thanks, Ellie and Amanda.. Those in post #22 & 23 are out, Elizabeth age wrong and in 1851 John is married with 2 offspring, living in Hull..

For some reason all 3 offspring John, Henry and Mary Elizabeth were in Hull before 1851 but no obvious sign of parents

Geoff

EDIT: The bap. is correct in post #23..

Possibly correct there.. Most of the males suffered similar fates over the years being mariners/fishermen, i.e. lost at sea. Including George Thomas who was possibly lost at sea between 1861-1871. There are also a fair few Henry', William' and Elizabeth' in that line

I would tend to agree, Em'....

If he was full age at his marriage and age rounded down in 1841 more-or-less has to be 1803...

I have a few notes on Henry Jr.. Possibles: Marr. maria Elizabeth Maunder 1848 Hull. Marr. Susannah Withington, nee Rutter 1855 Hull. Henry d. 1860 Hull. Susannah can be found in the 1861 census, b. Lincolnshire'. A little clinical but I have nothing else at present.

I thought the same thing about the death for Elizabeth, and I found the census on Ancestry. They were living in Paradise Alley on both census.

Given that we are getting short of possibilities, Paradise Alley has to be a contender now..

Neither Henry or Elizabeth have been confirmed in 1851...

Last together in Ramsgate, RD = Isle Thanet in 1841.

Only 2 possible marriages in the areas that Henry has lived in - Isle of Thanet Q1 1841 ruled out by the Q1. And, 1864 Brixham, RD = Totnes.

Worth also noting that the the 1864 marriage says Henry's father = Thomas, Custom House Officer. Widower and widow, so Mary must have married a Petherbridge

May be getting there, but still far from convinced

Geoff

EDIT: Looks like Mary Petherbridge's father = George Pine on that marriage cert..

Must be a possible..

Thomas Petherbridge
Marriage Date: 11 Dec 1819
Place: Brixham,Devon,England
Spouse: Mary Pine
FHL Film Number: 916758, 916759

I guess a suitable death for Thomas would help :)

Post 9
Sarah Vinton c1824 dau.of

John Clatworthy
Spouse's Name Sarah Morrish ?
Event Date 08 Sep 1817
Event Place Crediton, Devon,England

Thanks, Ellie..

That name again, Morrish is looking more likely than Norrish/Norris.. Once I get the main line sorted will have to check them out, that's at least 3x the name's crept in

It's possible that the Thomas who married Mary Pine was Henry's brother.
Unfortunately there were two couples called Thomas and Mary having children in Brixham at the same time. I have found two possible marriages Thomas Petherbridge and Mary Neck who married Brixham 1789 and Thomas Ptherbridge (widower) and Mary Hermitage (widow) who married there in 1801.

Looking at the baptisms there are the following children with parents Thomas and Mary (no clue as to which Thomas and Mary)
Mary Ann 1792/1802/1804
Thomas 1794(poss died 1794)/1798
Nicholas 1795
Christopher 1802/1803
Henry 1803
John 1805
William 1808

Thomas Petherbridge and Mary Pine also had several children and on their baptisms he is described as either Mariner or Fisherman. He and Mary appear in the 1851 Census (Thomas' birth year given as 1800) so he must have died between 1851 and 1861 when it looks like Mary is with Henry. Unfortunately I cannot find a death which fits.

Far too many Thomas and Marys!

Probably no help at all,

Emeltee
