Place of Birth. Not to sure

Please could someone advice me on where the place of birth is for John Sawyer.

On this census return of 1891 it says for John Sawyer Bedington but im not sure what the other word is (Possibly Luro?) or in fact where it is.

As you can see his wife was born in Nettlebed Oton which i think is near Oxford.

Any suggestions please

Also for William Sawyer it states occupation as twister what is that. I am most confused.

I agree, it does look like Beddington, Surrey. There is a Beddington in Surrey actually. Have you found John Sawyer on any previous censuses or the 1901 census to confirm this at all?

Tried checking his pob on previous census for a John Sawyer born Beddington. On one census is says Leddington Middx.

No haven't found them in 1901 as yet but the search continues.

I tried looking for Leddington Middlesex on google maps but it doesnt seem to exist so my bet its Beddington.
Oh well another birth certificate to be ordered to be sure.

Dont worry about being a no it all (wish i was).
Nettlebed is correct but it was the Beddington im not too sure on.

Also Sarah and John dont appear in the 1901 census that i can see.

erm i'd say that if you compare the 'L' of London with what you think is Luro? are different, I think and after conferring with Tom that it is Surs which is Surrey.

I have done 'some' transcribing here and there so know what to look for

In the 1851 census there is a John Sawyer born about 1850 with parents Richard and Mary in Teddington, Middlesex.

Richard is listed as aged 40 and a police constable. Several children were born in Surrey, Sussex and Teddington, which included John.

Thanks benny that is very interesting that will be worth investigating to see if that's the very same one. What confuses me is why it says Bedington clearly on the census return would that be a mistake from the transcription possibly?

If you obtained John's marriage certificate to Sarah then this will help matters as it will say if his fathers name was Richard.

from what I can gather Joe, more often that not it was a family member that filled in the enumeration form and then gave it to the enumerator when they called for it. so in essence it would be a transcription of what the householder (or more likely the scholar as they could write/read) that had filled in the enumeration schedule to be transcribed.

I think I may have found the marriage. I did a search on FreeBMD and found the marriage of a John Sawyer in the Mar Qtr 1875 in Kensington reg district. On the same page was a Sarah Steptoe. They may have wed there due to his job.

There is a Sarah Steptoe in the 1871 census aged 23 in Nettlebed Oxon, born in that village working as a servant.

I think career servants and coachman often worked away from home and sometimes their families accompanied them. This explains why so many children born to parents in such occupations were born in different areas.

The marriage cert details should confirm John's fathers name and occupation. Hopefully the subsequent births will give the mothers maiden name as Steptoe.
