1855 shipping record:

Jane 28 - Kilmarnock Ayrshire William & Mary Pawley mother living in Glasgow father dead
1851
Civil Parish: Paisley Abbey
Town: Elderslie
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 17 Elderslie
GALT Niven Head 31 Clath Lapper Paisley, Renfrew
GALT Jane Wife 27 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
GALT Mary dau 2 Paisley, Renfrew
GALT William son 3 Mo Paisley, Renfrew

That means 'Jane' is not Jean POLLOCK. So Niven married again between 1844 and 1851. I can't find such a marriage.

I can find no birth reg for daughter Mary or son William on SP.

And Mary PAWLEY should be in Glasgow in 1851. FreeCEN is impossibly slow.

William PAWLEY/PAULIE died before 1855.

The shipping record also lists a brother William Pawley living in Queensland, further evidence that Jane from Kilmarnock is not Jean POLLOCK from Renfrew.

William Paulie b. 31 Mar 1821
baptism/christening date: 7 Oct 1821 Girvan, Ayr
William Paulie & Mary Campbell

William PAULEY & Susan McLEAN
16 Jul 1847 Glasgow, Lanark

Deaths
1870/C00072 Pauley William - - ** born Scotland aged 48 years
1910/B12573 Pauley Susan - McLean - ** born Scotland aged 82 years

Mary PAWLEY (nee CAMPBELL) was living in Glasgow as of 1855. I can't find her in Scotland in 1851. The name has many possible variations the most common being PAULIE.

If Niven and Jane never married, or they hadn't married before Mary and William's birth we will need Jane's maiden name

PAWLEY/PAULIE/PAULEY

Brother William was already in colony.

Sorry, Dave... I meant to say if she hadn't been married before... or would that not affect the children's birth names

Shipping record has parent's name as PAWLEY and her brother is a William PAWLEY so I take it that is her maiden name.

As to if she married before the 'marriage' to Niven I can't say.

If she had married then the reg for the children will be in married name or her maiden name if they were born before she married.

Yep, that was the problem I was thinking of, if she had been previously married and we don't find it, we may never find the children's births.

We have this:

William Paulie b. 31 Mar 1821
baptism/christening date: 7 Oct 1821 Girvan, Ayr, Scotland
William Paulie & Mary Campbell

and we know Jane is a sister of Wiliam and that she was 28 in 1855 and born Kilmarnock. I don't know of any other siblings. But that is a large gap between the two.

Mary was alive as of 1855 and in Glasgow but I can't find her in 1851. Don't know when William died.

Yes and not in 1851 census:

Jean Campbell Galt b. 9 Dec 1845 Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Niven Galt & Jean Pollock
Batch: C119624

Yes, could have Campbell on both sides.

I gave up because like yesterday FreeCEN is impossibly slow searching for PAULIE etc... in 1841 and 1851.
