I've found out that my g-grandad, Arthur Holden b. 15 Jul 1894 Preston, Lancs, was a prisoner of war in WW1. That's all I know so far... How would I go about finding any more info on this?

Many thanks

Clare

Hello Clare,

Do you know when and where Arthur died? Did he die during the war?

Do you know what service he was in?

There are hundreds of A HOLDEN to sift through.

One of the UK-based members will probably be able to help you, especially if you can supply a bit more detail.

Regards,

Dave

Hey Dave,

I'm 90% sure he did in 1976. Just waiting on cert to confirm. But he defo didn't die in the war. I haven't got a clue what service he was in, but my great aunt might know. Her memory is a bit off though, but I'll try:)

I know what you mean about loads of A Holdens. Such a popular name!!

Thanks for looking for me.

Hello Clare,

Thanks. That's good in a way because it would take ages searching CWGC records if he had died during the war.

I'll have to leave it for one of the UK-based members.

Hi Clare :)
I know Anc## have prisoners of war but that's for WW2.
As Dave said there are a lot of WW1 medal records but nothing for
Arthur born in Preston or living in Preston.
Did the family move at all?
He may have enlisted in another county?
Do you have the parents in 1901?
We could then look at the next census.
Arthur Robert bn 1896 Preston?
All the best

So after so ringing around my family, I have found out that Arthur Holden was a Private in the 2nd Scottish Rifles and I also have his number. I also have a photo that my Uncle sent me of a handwritten letter from King George addressed to Arthur when he returned home. It's amazing. I never knew we had this!!

So using this information, how can I find his service records etc?

Many thanks,
Clare

Hi, i found two medal index card for your Arthur Holden.
First one he is listed in the Royal Field Artillery 697 Gunner, he then is transferred to the Scottish Rifles 30193 Private.
Both are free if your a member of Ancestry or £2 each from the National archives, links below.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...asp?Edoc_Id=3075093&queryType=1&resultcount=2

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...sp?Edoc_Id=3075109&queryType=1&resultcount=50

Also if you scroll down to the bottom of the page on this link, it will explain what all the Abbreviations
mean.

By the way, how do you know he was a P.O.W. and when & where was he at the time?
