This suggests that her mother was nee Steele and subsequently married a Mr Ried, after her daughter Mary's birth

By the time her daughter came to get married all those years later she had adopted (legally or not )her mothers husband's surname.

I think you have to follow both names Mr Ried may or may not have been Mary's natural father but that was the surname she used when she married, and you believe her parents were together when Mary was born

Hope you can make sense of it now

dochines thanks for your reply.one slight misunderstanding. The parents that were still together were my mothers,i first thought that mothers father had remarried, there is a 14yr gap from his marriage to Mary Ried and my mother being born.i thought he might have married this Mary Steele, but i can't find a marriage between a Albert Laycock and Mary Steele after 1901(Thats when he married Mary Ried)I think you could be on the right lines.Thank Again.Cumbrian
