Hi

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what regiment or war this uniform is from. It looks like WW1 to me but not sure.

It is a picture of my great grandfather who I believe served around the 1900s, so possibly 1906 or even WW1.

It would have been the British Army.

Any idea on regiment etc. would be appreciated.

cheers
Justine

Hi Justine...i have posted your picture on the Great War Forum.

He was deffo in a mounted regiment with horses....maybe the ASC.

A closer look at the cap badge would a clincher.....if i get any different replies i will let you know.

It is a nice photo.....did you notice the fat cigar he is holding:)

Hi

Thanks for your replies. what does ASC stand for? Here is a close up of his cap, not sure if you can really make out the badge properly though.

His name was Walter Richard Jeffrey and he was born in 1886 in Cambridgeshire, but would have been living in Baldock, Hertfordshire when he joined the regiment.

cheers

Hi Justine......think we may have cracked it.....if you look click on the link above and it seems our friends on the Great War Forum have come up trumps..
Its not certain but the image of another soldier looks identical to your man.

So it would seem he was an ASC driver,if not a driver almost certainly in the ASC regiment.
Your attachment of the cap didn't show so does it look similar to the cap badge in the above link?..i hope so:biggrin:
Seems the shape of the badge makes it certain that the regiment was the ASC......stands for Armed Service Corps.

Hope this helps....also i hope the Mods wont mind me saying but the Great War Forum is well worth registering with.

Lee.

Hi

Thanks for your help. That does look like a similar badge to the one on the cap. And the uniform is almost identical so i would say it is definitely the right regiment.

I will continue to follow up on stuff on the great war forum.

Thanks again for all your help.

cheers

If indeed he was a driver than this is what he would have looked like.
This picture shows an ASC driver from WW1.

My guess is he was probably similar to the above picture though....as it shows ASC horse regiment and your pic seems to have him with riding gear on as well.
The Bandolier over his shoulder like the pic....must have been an exciting job compared to the drudgery of an infantry soldier.

Two good pictures with probably the bottom one being closer to the mark.
