While waiting for all my Jones certificates delivery, I decided to crack on with my father's family in Scotland.

I have been flying with it (love that you actually get the entries and parents information on everything)

Anyway, I found the death of my ggrandfather, James Ross STEEL. The informant was his wife Agnes Steel. All of the previous records that I have researched have her M/S Rankeillor (marriage, childs birth etc) On her husband's death record it has her as Agnes Rankeillor OR RIDDOCK. She was the informant, so surely she should know what her name used to be? Where has Riddock come from?

I would have attached the entry, but it says the file is too large.

Looking at Scotlandspeople an Agnes Rankeillor married a James Ridocch 1890 - Newtington. Possibilty the marriage to James Steel in 1906 was a second marriage, though there are more than one Agnes Rankeillors.

That would make sense, my grandmother Annie Miller Steel was born in 1907. This is the first record that even suggested there was a previous name and/or marriage. Thank you.

I found her marriage to James Ross Steel and it lists her as a widow at 32 and James was a bachelor aged 39 which I though was unusual, and their address was the same. So it looks like they were living together before marriage, which must have been shocking for the time.
