Just found this thread. New member. Can't figure this site out yet. However, having spent a while on BMD, I've researched back as far as my father's mother's mother Annie Maria Salmon from Colchester (md. William Shepperd/Shepherd in Colchester 1865, I think, maybe) d. 'age 81' Tavistock Dec 1922.
Therefore Annie was probably the one born Colchester June 1845.
Trouble is, it looks like Annie was born Anna, plus there are lots of Maria Salmons, Annie Salmons, Anna Maria Salmons and Annie Marias and Annie M's and then there's husband William Shepperd who was probably registered at birth as Shepherd. It seems that 90% of births in Colchester were Salmons and Shepperds/Shepherds. My head hurts.
One thing I know for sure is that Annie (Anna?) and William Shepperd/Shepherd ran the Temperance Hotel (now the Ordulph Arms) in Tavistock from 1878 to 1912. And they had a daughter ... Annie! My grandmother. I think.
I'd love to straighten some of this out, so, if anyone's 'been there - done that' and would be kind enough to help me out... very grateful. I'd post my direct email address if I knew it was allowed.
The mere fact that this thread is headed Annie M Salmon just shows what a big, complex issue this is.

The fact the family are at the Temperance hotel all that time makes following them back to 1881 very easy.
The interesting thing is they were married 49 years ie 1863 give or take, and they had 5 children all alive in 1910
I won't quote the actual returns but list the ref nos, just in case

So Florence looks like the fifth child born about the time William married.

I think that this confirms your thinking back to 1865. I wouldn't get too hung up re the spelling of names. You have to bear in mind that a lot of people could not read or write, so the records were written as the names sounded.
Shepperd is a good example, and annie could be written as ann e. etc.

I echo the expression of gratitude to Dave.

As for the possibility of William Shepperd having lied about his age in 1861 at least, that's the only way that lots of other info can be made to make sense. He surely must have been born in 1841 in Colchester, but I have two births of William Shepherd (sic) in Colchester for 1841. Which one married Anna(ie) in 1865, and was therefore my g-grandfather?

The 1858 birth of Annie Maria Salmon in Colchester is, for me, a red herring (ha-ha!). My g-grandmother, known as Annie Maria, is actually birth-registered as Anna Maria Salmon qtr. June 1845 Colchester 12[61]. The bmd people seem to have recently adjusted an entry after I sent them a suggested problem. My g-grandmother, who became Annie M Shepperd, died in Tavistock in 1923 aged 78, a year after William. One of their daughters, Annie Emma M Shepperd b. 1868 was my grandmother. I'm reasonably confident about all this now.


Dave's references in no.9 to William's being a mariner is the greatest find for me. My father (William's grandson) inherited in the early fifties some extraordinarily ornate antique Chinese blackwood furniture and a magnificent (sorry) ivory Chinese junk under a bell-shaped glass dome. As a boy, I somehow picked up the family story that William had been on the China clippers - so that would have been about the years 1860-70+. He seems to have 'come ashore' and taken the Temperance Hotel in Tavistock in 1878. A bit of a story there, one would think - an ex-mariner as proprietor of a Temperance Hotel.

It was a bit of a year for my family, 1878. While the new proprietor was readying for the opening of the Temperance Hotel in Tavistock, with his doubtlessly excited 12-y-o daughter Annie, in far-off London the Brixton-born 13-y-o son of Tavistock native John Walters was beginning a 43-year career at the spanking-new Holborn Bars headquarters building of the ambitious Prudential Assurance Company.

Not until 1899 would they marry.

The ship 'William Frances' I have been unable to trace (I only have Google to help, after all). There was a William and Francis ship in the 1630s which was a member of the fleet that took Puritans to New England. I'm wondering if the name was carried forward down the generations of shipowners. Does that sort of thing happen?

It seems that the majority of ships in the China trade at that time (from the UK and the US in particular) did stop in Hong Kong. As that's where I am, maybe I should start looking here for records of ships calling.

Sorry if this is of no relevance to other Annie M Salmon researchers.
