Hello from New Zealand

My search has led me to your we site. After much searching on other sites to little avail, I need to find information about the following before I arrive in England in early April this year.

It is unfortunate that I have started my search after the relatives who knew what I wanted have passed on. But I guess that's how it goes.

I am looking for information regarding my great Grand Father and Mother, William Bennet Reed and his wife Ellen. They emigrated form the Gloucestershire area around 1878 to New Zealand with Ellens's litle girl Ellen Maude.

We have no reference of what vessel they sailed here on or on their marriage in England. Ellen was marriage before to James Brain, thus her daughter Ellen Maude.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

A death for James but is it the right one given age?

There are several possible birth registrations for daughter Ellen in the index. I can find no baptism record.

I can find no marriage for a William REED with middle name of Bennet in the index before 1878.

This is the only marriage registered in Gloucestershire 1869 - 1878 for a William REED to an Ellen:

I can find no marriage in England for a William REED to an Ellen BRAIN or HALE/HAILE 1869 - 1878.

So I wonder did Ellen actually marry James BRAIN?

Was Ellen Maude's birth actually registered and if so under what name?

Seems William married not using his middle name and if spouse is Ellen and not some variation in the index and if 1869-1878 then there is only one marriage that I can see in Gloucestershire:

If the marriage was not registered in Gloucestershire then there are lots in England.

Something does not add up.

Age at death for Ellen Maud gives a birth around 1877 hence this probably registration April-June. It is the registration not the actual birth which could be months prior:

Age at death for William gives a birth around 1835 hence a possible:

I can find no birth/baptism for Ellen FLORENCE or a marriage for an Ellen to a FLORENCE. I've looked at the image of the index of the marriage and the name is recorded as FLORENCE.

I'm not sure it is the right marriage.

A copy of Ellen's death certificate might have some clues if fully filled in.

There are several Ellen REEDs in the Electoral Rolls and several death registrations 1896 (b. abt 1840), 1903 (b. abt 1845) and 1922 (b. abt 1850).

When did Ellen spouse of William die? 1922 ???


I've looked at all the vessels that arrived via Lyttelton in 1878 and can't find the family. Not all passenger lists are on-line and not all lists that are on-line include steerage passengers.

Birth registered in NZ in 1879 but actual birth could be late 1878.

I have all the local NZ records and have contact with many of the NZ family. I also have a cousin who is following through the records and we don't think the above ar ein our tree.

I would not assume that any with spelling other than REED were therefore not part of the same family. Records are taken orally and different people would write the name down in their own way on hearing it.

Hi Dave

I need to find the birth details of William Bennet Reed, his parent and siblings.
Rumour has it that he was adopted and possibly came from the Warnford area. He may have had a brother Richard (army captain in Gibraltor), George, and sister Sarah Ann.
William was a blacksmith and another rumour says he damaged his eyes from forge sparks while working in Wales.
From his death certificate he was born 1835, died 1902, and Ellen was born 1850, died 1922. However, there are no records of their marriage, their coming to NZ around 1878, or the birth of little Ellen Maude.
I am trying to find as many details as possible and possible grave locations of relatives to visit and honour in England.
