Registration districts etc

Some of my family come from Melksham Wiltshire, some of their BMD's come under Melksham, others come under Trowbridge, Devizes, Chippenham and Bradford on Avon.

I don't know when the registry office ceased performing marriages in Melksham and people went to Trowbridge, Devizes, Chippenham or Bradford on Avon to marry or give birth.

Some births actually happened in Melksham but the registration district for parts of Melksham (e.g. Atworth) came under the registration district of Bradford on Avon.

Can anyone help me to understand this a bit better?
