I know that I have a Brickley as a 3X Great Grandfather: who was in the 49th Regiment of Foot, British Army. He was Thomas Brickley:

BIRTH 17 MAR 1793 • Enniscorth, Wexford, Ireland
DEATH 8 JUL 1844 • St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands;

On a family tree of one of my DNA Matches there are Richard (b. abt. 1765) and George Brickley (b. abt 1775) born in Shropshire, both members of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot [I think].

I wonder if anyone has some clues that might lead to a family relationship among the 3 Brickleys? The Brickleys I know of moved around a lot- serving in Canada, France, West Indies, Ireland and South Africa and their history has huge gaps but I know enough and my cousins agree, that Thomas Brickley and his desendants are "ours". Can we claim Richard and George plus their descendants?

Any help welcome. I do not have access to FMP and I am hopeless with the British Archives- the Australian ones trick me frequently!

I thought becoming a Chelsea pensioner meant leaving the Army too- but who knows whether they might have needed some old-timers to volunteer after the Battalion experienced heavy losses or were occupied elsewhere? I have little understanding of the finer points of military history but I think there were multiple battles going on all over the world in the 1800s- France, Spain, India, China, Africa, Ireland. They may have needed many soldiers to return to battle.

There are some books on Amz for sale.,usually where i go to
Thanks for this hint- I didn't know there could be actual printed books about regiments etc. Also- I navigated my way in the BNA to the Muster Rolls of the 49th Foot and I am taking advantage of the FREE downloads to search for Brickleys.

Prior to 1719, there were two types of Chelsea Pensioner, one living in and the others sort of semi retired soldiers.
In 1719, due to the Jacobean Rebellion, there was a need to form additional regiments to cover the normal
garrison duties thereby allowing the fit fighting regiments to tackle that. One of them was formed from within
the Chelsea Pensioners, initially known as 'Regiment of Invalids'. Thereafter, in time this Regiment became the
41st Regiment of Foot and subsequently THE WELCH REGIMENT. In today's world, you have to apply to become
a Chelsea Pensioner and not every one is accepted, I wouldn't qualify as I was in and out of the Army before they
instituted the Pension system.

In later years the word 'Invalids' was replaced with the word 'Veterans'.

Army career not necessarily over once you are discharged and become an In- or Out- Chelsea Pensioner.

I have an ancestor born in Ashburton, Devon who joined the army and served in the 40th in the Napoleonic Wars. He was awarded the GSM plus 6 bars. He was discharged in Scotland on 24 June 1821. He was a Chelsea Pensioner.
