Hello I was wondering if someone could help me with a tricky case.

My ancestor Richard Godfrey born 11th December 1910 to parents Henry William and Jemina Godfrey (Caddick) Born 1888 Manchester. I have found on a 1911 census that he and his mother were in a workhouse in Manchester he was 4 months old. I can't understand why they would be. His father is on a 1911 census with his parents aged 26. His father then served in WW1 for 3 years from 1915.

Richard i believe then moves to America I have a marriage certificate for him in 1938 in Virginia, He is then Naturalized in 1961. On his marriage certificate his parents are noted as Father Col Charles Godfrey and Jemima Caddick. Am i right in thinking his mother re-married and his Charles Godfrey a relation to Richard. The marriage certificate gives no indication on where his parents are living and i'm yet to find this marriage of Charles and Jemima. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some thing not right here, in the 1911 Richard Henry Godfrey age 4 years not 4 months but wrongly transcribed.

So did jemima marry 3 times?. Charles Bogart is a different name to Charles Godfrey. The age of Richard Godfrey says 4 months on the workhouse record is this not correct. He was born in December 1910 so would Match up?

He may of put Godfrey on marriage cert for Robert to make it look respectful with Jemima but Jemima fits well on the 1939 and death. Have you got her birth cert. to see if it is 24 Oct 1888.

My biggest question is why would she and Richard go into a workhouse in 1911 when Henry William was down as living with parents. Henry William is down as married as well on that census.

I think most workhouse's were hospitals as well.
