I am a little confused a could do with some advice.

I have been searching Richard Sawyer born abt 1810 in Newdigate Surrey.
Now my search has hit a bit of a wall because i have him in the 1861, 1851 and 1841 census.
So i thought i would try and do a IGI search for him but the only Richard Sawyer i can find on there which is any where close is, Richard Sawyer christened in Stoke D'Abernon, Surrey, England in 1810, which is about 25 miles from Newdigate, and cant find anything closer.
I would like to find out Richards parents names and so i was hoping IGI would reveal that.
I guess Richards family may of moved very soon after his birth for some reason or he wasn't christened at all.

Has anybody got any suggestions or ideas how i could solve this mystery??

Hi

Do you know when Richard married? Was it before or after 1837?

Have you looked for any other Sawyers born in Newdigate on the censuses?

Sawyer is not an unusual name so the 1810 IGI baptism could be another Richard Sawyer.

As Sawyer is an occupational surname, then it is not rare.

I dont know when he married unfortunately i do not know when Richard married Mary Miller bus as the youngest son was born abt 1838 its quite probable the married before 1837 so may not be able to find a marriage certificate.
I havnt searched for other Sawyer's born in Newdigate throughly as yet.

Hi

I think they did marry before 1837. I have checked the BMD registers. At least you know Mary's maiden name.

I did find a William and Charlotte Sawyer in Sussex in 1851. Charlotte was born in Newdigate c1789.

Well i guess i was wrong because i have just found the census return for Richard Sawyer who was christened in Stoke D'Abernon and it states his occupation as agricultural laborer. But in the same census for my Richard Sawyer his occupation he is a police constable, so it looks like im back to square one as he was born in abt 1811 any suggestions on how i can find his parents?

Hi

That does rule out the Stoke born one then.

The IGI has Newdigate indexed online and I checked through their actual batch number indexes for the village but couldnt find any Sawyers I'm afraid.

I wonder if he was maybe baptised at a nearby village? I,e parents place of marriage or birth.
