Not sure if we've seen this

Robert Haylock
Age: 24
Date of Conviction: 21 Oct 1835
Place of Conviction: Cambridge
Estimated birth year: abt 1811
Vessel: Moffatt (2)
Port of Arrival: New South Wales
Date of Arrival: 30 Aug 1836

The image has a written note, looks like 'free something 1842 something letter etc'

If that is what it says, it would fit with the 7yrs he received in 1835.
Just got some updated info, apparently it should be on film 'Colonial Secretary's Correspondence which is on microfilm at State records and the State Libraries.' for 1942.

I'm wondering if this is a possibility?

Must be honest, I don't know.. on the indent the comment was 'free' Sept 1842, so I would guess, since he received 7y in 1835 it would be a CoF!

Ok, looks like a search of Reel 1012 then next time I go to the State Library.

The Certificates are numbered as issued so he should have one numbered between 1311 and 1818. That's a lot of convicts.

42/1311 29 Jul 1842

42/1818 19 Oct 1842

Thanks, Dave..

That would be great if he was found. Still can't believe so little has been found, yet his brother is fairly well documented up to his ToL..

No luck Geoff at the State Library.

They don't have a full set of films. No Certificates of Freedom. They have the series ending with 965 and then start the series again at 1236.

He would have been granted a ToL and a CP and so he may be on other films but which one?

The library had extra info but not the film.
Certificate of Freedom
Reel 1012
Volume MMMM 15 Aug 1842 - 17 Sep 1842
Volume NNNN 17 Sep 1842 - 1 Nov 1842

The films are not easy to read so perhaps he is not in the index along with others because parts of some films can't be read.

I was in the Mitchell Library today to finish viewing the film of the Parish register of SS Peter and Paul Goulburn.

I noticed a stack of films with convict details. Not the same set of films that NSW Archives has but a set of the records from TNA, the HO10 series.

Reel 81
HO10/53 NSW Pardons 1842 - 1848 and ToL 1843

Not sure if it has CoF.

I've found the closest CoF to 21 Sep 1842

David ANDSLEY 42/1636 17 Sep 1842

I'll go back one day next week.

No index, no frame numbers.

It's a set of lists. The Governor approved a batch of convicts for ToL or CP or AP or CoF on different days of each year. The numbers are unique only within each class. The convicts are listed in sequence by the number. It's not easy finding the start of each list.

I'll have to search for David ANDSLEY 1636.

I was back in the Mitchell Library today and had a look at the film of HO10/53.

It's a very long film of faded records with no index. Pages and pages of names in various lists not all with the number of the certificate. I searched for 1636 and found several but not one was David ANDSLEY. He could be listed as 1636th in a list without the running sequence of numbers beside the name.

Ok, I'd say those films were useless if you wanted to trace a few convicts.
