If James had been a Tasmanian convict we'd have parents and siblings names and a physical description of him.

That's a dead end.

I wonder if there is some confusion with James Taylor, possibly with an alias such as this...

UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849
Terry McManus
[James Taylor]
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1768
Date Received: 19 May 1808
Ship: Captivity
Place Moored: Portsmouth
Date Convicted: 27 Apr 1803
Place Convicted: Salford

Geoff

Edit: Disch' 27 April 1810

Don't think we will have any luck Geoff.

Do we even know he was born in Lancs? Just because he was convicted there?

How do we know it's the Lancs one? Because a tree says so!

The second set of films at the State Library might have more info re the 1810 marriage. If the allegations can be found it will list the vessel.

The image from film at local library:

Date of Departure: July 1808.
Place of Arrival: New South Wales.

TAYLOR James Admiral Gambier 1808 30/448 Ticket of Leave [4/4075; Reel 914] District: Illawarra; Born: Surrey; Trade: Sawyer; Tried: Kent GD

TAYLOR James Admiral Gambier 1808 25/474 Ticket of Leave [4/4060; Reel 890] District: Kissing point; Born: Surry 1767; Trade: Sawyer; Tried: Kent GD 1807

All we know is that he arrived before the 1810 marriage.

There are 98 x James and three others also arrived before 1810.

TAYLOR James - Calcutta 1803 - CP 31 Jan 1815 [4/4430] 774 - 082

I can't see a permission to marry in 1810 so it would seen those who arrived 1808 or 1803 would not have had CP by 1810.

That leaves two who arrived earlier.

I think we wait until I can check out the 1810 marriage on the other set of films. It may have age or occupation or ship or consent of Governor. I can't see CP or TOL or App to Marry for several if those who arrived before 1810.

I'll sleep on that so catch you later.

I can't find a James who fits. There is no Application to Marry so it would appear James had at least a CP.

There are two more not listed in the Transportation database who arrived before 1810.

That makes 5 to try to sort out.

TAYLOR James Stafford 03/1790 7 years Britannia (1) or one other vessel in that fleet

TAYLOR James Middlesex 07/1784 7 years One of these vessels in the fleet- Alexander, Charlotte, Friendship I, Lady Penrhyn, Scarborough (1), Prince of Wales

Oh, 4 years before the First Fleet.

The difficulty with James is that there are a few possibles, including 2 aliases and 2/3 cm's... he may have been a soldier..

Yes. I suggest we wait until I can search the films at the Mitchell Library for another version of the 1810 marriage.
