re Mary Ellen Roberts 1866 - 1924
http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/roberts-mary-ellen-8227

Mary Ellen Roberts (1866-1924), teacher of dressmaking, was born on 18 May 1866 at Growler's Creek (Wandiligong), Victoria, second child of English parents John Hartley Roberts, head teacher, and his wife Mary Ann, née Ellis. One of thirteen children, she was probably educated at her father's schools at Linton, Haddon, Wedderburn and Majorca. About 1882 she accompanied her family to Tonga, where her father, as director of education and president of Government College for seven years, founded the island's free and compulsory education system. He spent some years in New Zealand in the 1890s before returning to Tonga. Mary taught women's handicrafts in Tongan government schools and was organist at the royal chapel.

Hi Dave,
I have just joined this particular Forum and am very interested in your questions regarding this particular Roberts family.
I was unable to find an 1841 census also for this family, (OR an Immigration record) but have many details re the Mary (A) Ellen after she arrives in Australia.
She married a Charles Croaker in Melbourne, Victoria in 1857.
Her mother, Mary (nee Griffiths) also came to Australia and is buried in St Kilda Cemetery, St Kilda, Victoria, Australia - she died November 1890.
I am unable to find details that can be satisfactorily verified regarding Mary Ellen's father or siblings, but I have reason to believe that Samuel also came with mother and sister.
Mary Ellen's eldest daughter, Ellen Louise 'Nellie' Croaker, returned to England about 1892 and married an Allan Vardon White. They had 1 daughter.
The Croaker name is variously transcribed as Crooker, Croker, Craker on the various records, but I have so far been able to substantiate that they are one and the same people.
I am still trying to relate this particular Charles Croaker with my 2nd great grandfather, also Charles Croaker, who came to NSW in 1843 with his wife and 13 children!!!
I have connected with 2 ladies in Kent who are also related to the Victorian Charles Croaker's parents, William and Elizabeth (nee Hardes).

I have just read a comment added to my Ancestry Family tree which goes as follows:
Samuel Hartley Roberts born, 16 Nov 1831 Manchester Lancashire England Death, 1885 Richmond Victoria Australia Married, 1856 Victoria Australia To, Maria Emma Robins and had 9 Children.

I will persevere in trying to find an Immigration record for the Roberts family, but these are often very difficult to trace.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

I'll check why the family is in my tree. Not all are direct lines and some in fact are way out on a limb.

I didn't know Mary nee Grifiths also came to Australia. I had no death for her or Thomas.

Apart from the marriage posted in this topic this is all I can add re Croaker. I'm already out on a limb with T.V.

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957) - Saturday 28 March 1857 p.4
MARRIAGES
On Friday, the 27th inst., at Christ's Church, South Yarra, by the Rev. W. N. Guinness, Charles Croaker, Esq., to Mary Ellen, daughter of Thomas Roberts, Esq., of South Yarra.

Some parts of London are missing from 1841 but that probably does not explain why they have not been found in 1841 yet. I'd say the family would be in Essex or Middlesex.

Unassisted to Victoria
