Absolute beginner here.First timer trying to find some background for dad but don't know where to start or what to do really.
My dad is Charles Rogers born 1800's on the 23rd October, registared in Wandsworth.Parents are Walter H.(I think Henry) and Charlotte Rogers of Battersea.
He had a brother Arthur Henry Rogers who at 17yrs was killed when his ship HMS "Monmouth"was torpedoed on 1st Nov 1914. We are not sure if another brother named Albert Edward Rogers(maybe a twin??) died 17yrs on the same ship as above. Names found on Plymouth Naval Memorial.Dad also had a sister Nell or Nellie who died(we know no age or what from) and we don't know if there were any other children of the marriage? or any thing about Dad's parents??
Dad was a sailor on Clippers??Was a cabin boy at 13?
He married my Mum here in Australia in his late 40's and died here in the 1970's.So am at a dread end! That's all we as a family know.So what do I do now??If anyone can help I'd be very grateful for any advice or help.

Hi there and welcome
To give you a start, here they are on the 1901 census:

Walter H Rogers 37 born Madeley, Shropshire
Charlotte A Rogers 38 born Kenton, Devon
Arth H Rogers 3 born Battersea, London

Living at 23 Yelverton? Road, Battersea

If you want me to look further back on cenuses for Walter and Charlotte, it's no trouble !

Bye for now,

Looks like them on the 1901 census.

Civil parish Battersea, Registration district Wandsworth, sub reg dist Northwest Battersea

Walter H Rogers born abt 1864 Madeley Shropshire occ looks like Navy but has a thick black line through it
Charlotte A wfe born abt 1863 Kenton Devon
Fred W son born abt 1900 Battersea London
Arth H son born abt 1898 " "

To look for Walter and Charlotte on the 1881 census that is free to view on
Ancestry so are the partial bmd's.

You can also look at the free bmd's on Rootsweb

Thank You so much Julie and Hawkeye. What I'm searching for is mainly whether there were any more brothers/sisters of Charles Rogers my Father?
How do I do that? Maybe they all died? But Thanks to you both there seems to be at least a Fred? We hadn't heard of him? All Dad spoke about was losing 2 brothers in the war and the death of sister Nell/Nellie?I'm hoping there are other siblings that I can trace too.I'm afraid those BMD's on those sites really confuse me,I can't work them out.
I appreciate you both going to so much trouble on my behalf.

Hello

Yes things can see confusing at first  , but persevere you will soon get the hang of things.;)

Plus with sites like this there is always someone to lend a hand, if you have a local family history society near you it is worth joining as you will get first hand help on how to use the various research methods and even though the 'local' area may not be where most of your relatives originate from, you will still learn valuable research skills.

I have joined my local society but on my mothers side the family are of French\Italian origin further interesting by the fact they were in India!

Happy Hunting:biggrin:

Thank You My Roots for your reply.
I'm just up in the air, as to how one finds children of the family? We would love to know how many children? and their names? did Walter and Charlotte have? Does one find out these things on the cenus that my 2 friends above spoke about? or is there another avenue?
I do apologise for being so uneducated re these matters but my Mum turns 90 this year and I would love to show her Dad's family tree. I'm a very mature age myself so am making this a venture for all the family.

Hi again,
finding the other children of the family is going to be a tough one - ones born before 1901 will be on the census for that year - see above.
Then comes the difficult part - children born after 1901.
I have done a quick search of the indexes for births of Rogers children in Wandsworth between 1901 and 1910, and there are 211!!! There is no way to find out which of those belonged to your family without sight of the birth certificates - as far as I know.
You can wait until the 1911 census is published in a few years time, but that doesn't really help you for now - sorry.
There is a candidate for your Nellie - a Nellie Amelia Rogers born AMJ 1908, she dies within the same quarter (AMJ) 1908. That is if she was christened Nellie and not Ellen, and called Nellie, if you know what I mean?
After about 1911, finding siblings gets easier in a way, in that the mother's maiden name was recorded. But it seems that in your case that might be a bit too late?
I have done a quick check back and it seems that the marriage of Walter Henry Rogers and Charlotte Annie Rugg took place in Chelsea in JAS 1888. You could order a copy of their marriage certificate, but again that won't help you with any children after 1901.
I'll have a look on the freebmd as suggested and get back to you.
Hope that helps to explain why it isn't so easy after 1901.
Hawkeye.

Just to update - no, there is nothing more on freebmd, the mother's maiden name is only recorded from Sep 1911 onwards.

Hi Again

As like the rest of us you are waiting for the next census release
you could put on this and as many other family research sites you may be a member of, a 'call out' for information on children of Walter H and Charlotte Rogers of Battersea, include the children you know of with dates\places - much as your first post on here - hopefully someone somewhere will be researching your family too and voila you will obtain information if you make a connection. Generally placed under Surname or Wanted strings.

Thanks MyRoots. I see I have to wait until a Census is released to find out more. How come that they all aren't released by this year 2007?There apparently must be a valid reason. As Hawkeye and Julie found the parents of Dad....I wonder why his name can't be found on a census or something. Also Hawkeye wrote about a Fred......so does that mean he's a brother as well?
This is all overwhelming to me and I do wish I had done this years and years ago,but unfortunately they didn't have computers then HaHa!
Re Nellie Hawkeye, you may have hit the nail on the head re an abbreviated name as Dad did say she used to run to meet him when he came home from sea and he was devestated when he came home another time to learn't she'd died. Dad wanted to name me Nellie(I'm the eldest of 5 daughters and no sons) but Mum put her foot down and said no, so I was named the closest to it' Helen' although my whole family call me Nellie.
So folks look like I've hit a blank wall here and can't find out anymore.Dad's died, his 2 brothers died 1914 and Nellie died so maybe that's all the siblings. I'm so disappointed but that's the way it goes sometimes isn't it.Thank You all, for all your hard work, advice and kindness.

What I would do in the meantime is to obtain a copy of either Fred or Arthurs birth cert, this will give you the mothers maiden name, this will start from the Sept 1/4 1911 onwards as any children's birth registered from then will have the mothers maiden name entered in the index.

The reason 'all' the census returns aren't yet published is that they were taken every 10 years, but 'closed' for 100 years, also there was no census in1941 (WW2), and I believe there are some problems regarding some of the other 20th century records.

Try googling Family Records Centre, as I think they have info about what is available on their website.

A subscription (or pay-per-view) with ancestry.co.uk will give you access to lots of info if you want to go further back.
