Hi Everyone! I have found out that I have Ancestors who were Born or Lived in Ireland. Anyone any ideas how I can get started? The names I am interested in are John Reilly(County Mayo) Walter Donnelly (Houghae)James Donnelly(Unknown) & Hannah Neilan (Roscommon)John was born about 1886 Walter1886 James1812 & Hannah 1835. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks

I live about 15 miles from Roscommon town, but unfortunately have no transport.
Apart from the usual archives, you could email www.roscommonherald.ie or www.westernpeople.ie

The first address is obvious, the second address is a Mayo newspaper, send them both an enquiry, and I'm sure you will get a reply.

Hi Littlemo, I'm sure with names like that they were born here. Don't forget to look for variations of the names.

For example:-

Reilly = Rahily=Raheely= o'reily. etc.
Donnelly = Donaly= Donnally= o'donnelly = o'donnell. etc.

A lot of people dropped the o' from their surnames.

And also gaelic spelling eg. Roscommon = Ros coma'in Mayo = Mhaigh E'o

Here is a Walter, not even though this one does not state which county he was born in in Ireland . the second appears to be the same person, but his mother was remarried then so put both in, grant you I don't know if he is whom you are looking for but infor fits
