Rowland Street, Heaton Norris, Stockport

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm looking for a Rowland Street in Heaton Norris, Stockport. I haven't had any luck on Google maps so I am assuming this must have been demolished. I have family living on this street in 1911 according to that census.

I worked in that area for some time so have a good knowledge of (current) streets and pubs, if someone knows what it may have been near?

Even the smallest bit of information would be a great help.

Hi Jo,

Did you notice any other streets, while looking through the census. With any luck, they could have survived.
Or maybe a trip to The Cenral Information Library down Wellington Road, Stockport, and have a look to see if they have any older maps you can look at.

I know this is late but have just joined this site and your question popped up in a search I was doing.

You may have already sorted this but I thought I'd send a reply anyway.

The only Rowland Street I know is the one just off Reddish Vale Road, on the left at an angle as you go into RVR off Reddish Road.
It could be the right one as boundaries have changed over the years

Hi Jo, It's obviously a long time since you posted this enquiry so I don't know if this information is still relevent to you - but if not, it may well be of interest/relevence to someone else doing historical research so here goes: I also have family members who lived in Rowland Street at around the same time. I also had no luck in locating this street - even using maps from that period. However, I also happen to live very close to the location where Rowland Street once stood, and piecing together information gathered from other sources and enquiries I have made locally - I have recently discovered that Rowland Street was actually located somewhere off Sandy Lane on the South Reddish/Heaton Norris border. There was infact a pub called the Rowland Hill at the bottom end of Sandy Lane - roughly where the retail park and MacDonalds Drive Thru are located today. I am reliably informed that this pub was demolished during the late 1960s, but there are photographs of it (both inside and out) in the Stockport Local Image archive online. It was apparently a large premises with a couple of very narrow streets of terrace houses behind it. I believe thar Rowland Street was one of them, and was possibly not marked on the old maps because it was such a narrow thoroughfare. I expect it was demolished at the same time as the pub - and would have stood roughly where the car park at the side of Halfords is today. Hope this helps.

Hi. A long time since your original post so I don’t know if you’re still interested, but I can tell you exactly where Rowland St was. I lived at 26 Rowland St as a child from 1962 to 1966. It ran between Basil St and Belmont St, in between Clement St and Grafton St. It has long since been demolished and there is some sort of local centre building there now, which has been closed for some time.

By the way, The National Library of Scotland has an excellent collection of old maps, available to view free online. Checkout this one which clearly shows Rowland Street at the top left.
