That's the only Ann I can find then the matching middle names although there are three other possibles for a Joseph baptised at Coventry with parents Joseph & Mary.

Two marriages for both of them or 2x John & Joseph ???

Royal arrived in 1842 so can he be found in Kent in 1841? On a prison hulk maybe. ???

name: Royal Atkins
event: Census
event date: 1841
gender: Male
age: 25
birthplace:
record type: Household
registration district: Greenwich
sub-district: St Nicholas Deptford
civil parish: St Nicholas Deptford
county: Kent

Royal's convict record in Tasmania says he was moved to a hulk because of the noise he made. Surgeon's report lists his conduct as 'bad' :D

Could someone please check if that is a household or a prison hulk.

The Surgeon's report says Royal was ironed on the hulk for noise. General conduct: Bad.

Wonder if we can get the name of the vessel.

Thanks Geoff.

I can't see the name mentioned in any of the records I've downloaded.

He is listed as a Labourer and Engine driver on different records. Married and three children in England. That's one thing we didn't do - chase the names of those children.

Regards,

Dave

Thanks Geoff.

This one possible too:

Mary Atkins
England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening: 5 Sep 1841 SAINT MICHAEL,COVENTRY,WARWICK,ENGLAND
parents: Mary Atkins

Yes, I think Royal/Royle is not limited to those born after the marriage to Mary ASTON so it looks as though we'll never be sure of the maiden name of Royal's mother.

Dear me he was a bit of a lad if this was him, age fits..

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892
Name: Royal Atkins
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815
Date of Trial: 26 Mar 1835
Trial Year: 1835
Location of Trial: Warwickshire, England
Sentence: Death

He was tried for burglary with a John Atkins 18, both sentenced to death and had the sentence commuted to 12 months.

Possibly worth remembering John.

Thanks Geoff,

Now that is interesting. John Aston b. 1817 - 2 years younger.

Other John ATKINs 1812, 1814, 1820 & 1822 Coventry.

I can add to that:

Ident:
Number: 7930 Name: ATKINS Royal Where Tried: Warwick Coventry City G.Q.S. When Tried: 14 Oct 1839 Height: 5 5 1/4 Age: 27 Sentence: 7 Religion: P Read or Write: R Single or Married: M Statement of Offence: Stealing some machinery work belonging to Birmingham Railroad Compy. - 12 mos. for Housebreaking - Ironed at the Hulk for noise Surgeons Report: 2 Offces. Bad Trade: Labourer Native Place: Coventry Remarks: W. Mary at NP F. Joseph M. Mary at NP B. Jno, Joseph S. Ann at NP

So Housebreaking was the first of the two offences.

NP = Native Place

HMS Thames 1841–1863 - Bermuda and Deptford - Thames was a 46 gun Fifth-rate launched in 1823. She was converted to a prison hulk in 1841, and sank at her moorings in 1863.
