Im researching the Naral carbineers and would like to hear from anyone who has conncections to the unit. We are putting together a list of past members from 1873 onwards for the Carbineers museum. The museum , in Pietermaritzburg, is open to the public and has a host of wonderful items used by the Carbineers in all wars.

Hi Chiad

Thank you for that. I do have a disply up in the museum on Sgt Drummond. He was affectionately known by his men as "Dog and was respected by all of them. Please PM your e mail address and I will send you the documents and photos I have on him. I also have a story written about his burial and the soldier who was there and wrote the story is still very involed with the Carbineers. maybe you would like to contact him - He was very good friends with Sgt Drummond. I aalso have a photo of his original grave which may be of interest

Look forward to hearing from you

I hope I'm not double posting here ... I did reply about three hours ago but my post hasn'r appeared yet!

I can't find how to email you with a PM for the information and I would really like to get it as I have a 'cousin' from Kent who's travelling to SA this week and I'd like her to get the info as well as I'm sure she'd be keen to follow it up!

This is very 'un-subtle' but you can contact me on my 'name' closed up, all in lower case, with 'at' btinternet

Chiad,

You have the wrong Christian name for this man, he was Hugh Malcolm Drummond not Henry and he was my mother's brother. He was never a Sgt either which I have seen somewhere though he was known as "Dog Drummond" & is buried at El Alemain war cemetry. If he is a close relation of yours we are related!

Im researching the Naral carbineers ...
Izabel

The bubble well and truly burst when I discoverd from Annie that Hugh and his family connect the two of us by the Drummond surname only.

I have to say that, given the presence of a James Drummond 'Minister of Religion' in the family that this was the SECOND James Drummond 'Minister of Religion' to lead me off in totally the wrong direction. I've met a lot of nice people because of them both nevertheless!

The article about Hugh was very moviing and quite obviously penned by a very dear friend who had to deal with his death in his own way ... no bereavement counsellors in these days.

Good luck with your quest for more information on the Carbineers. I think Annie plans to visit the museum when she's in SA.
