Some people are likely to take offence at banter that is cruel. Ie jokes about someones slight affliction or full one, or jokes to someone about something they are not like sexuality.

I hope I have never come across rude to any one if i have then i appologise, I have had a reply from my enquiry about 1911 census going online (free ). I understand it has to be paid for, and in the past i have travelled to record centres and paid for my copies. I also know someone has to transcribe them im not stupid and it takes time and people give it freely. Again i fully understand this, the point i was trying to make and didnt come accross very clear was i subscribe to Ancestry. I pay a lot of money monthly so i can locate a lot of records i can no longer afford to travell to find. All i was asking was will they go online soon so i dont have to pay twice by buying credits on another site.
Again for all of those who have given their free time to help me in the past, thank you and it is really appriciated.

Thanks peeps xxxxx

The companies that host the census online pay the transcribers and indexers to do the work the transcriptions are not done freely (though one company sometimes pays with site access or limited subscription type deals).

Incidentally I have talked to one such provider who was worried about the costs involved in reworking the 1911 to include the redacted column next year.
Such a seemingly easy operation is very time consuming and as a result expensive.

In answer to your question about online access; it is being developed as quickly as possible.
The limitations are because of money and computer time.
Banks of multi cpu computers are at present churning away at full speed to affect this as quickly as possible but please remember there is a huge potential problem looming for those who provide (and wish to provide) the 1911 online in that the costs and time scale will be vastly increased due to having to include (people are going to want to subscribe to the site that provides full images rather than redacted images) next year.
One estimate is that it will double the costs of both computer time and finance (think here in terms of hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of hours/pounds).

There is at present much uncertainty about the ease or difficulties involved in providing that last column, which will not be resolved fully until next year when they themselves gain access to the pages.
Worst case scenario means a complete re-working of the entire operation.

I hope this explains some of the problems involved in this massive undertaking
Cheers

Guy, we all really appreciate the work that you all do to ensure we have access to all censuses etc. The transcribing of the parish registers, especially those going back to the 1700 and 1600s, must have been a complete labour of love, as they are so difficult to decipher from the original images and they have been brilliantly transcribed. It is a complete joy to have them and I for one am incredibly grateful, that we have them on Ancestry now.

I can understand how frustrating it would be for you, that often the difficulties of getting them to us and costs involved are not well understood. Times are tough and budgets stretched all around and sometimes we forget to be grateful to those doing their best to make our family history more accessible than ever before. You all do an amazing job!

Cheers,
Jill

Peeps I have recently had cause to delete someone from facebook as a supposed friend. I had been in contact with a fellow researcher for a few years, we had family connections. We passed infomation onto each other as we all do. As soon as we connected on facebook this person realised my personal relationship with my long term partner wasnt to his liking. Ok we are all different, we all live different lives, but we have family research interests incommon. I could be an alien but i still have family, parents, grandparents cousins, sisters and brothers etc etc.
This man was so rude with his remarks and tried to appologise in a fashion, which wasnt acceptable to me as his comments were still offensive. My life hasnt come to a stand still because we no longer converse.
Sorry to be so deep and maudling peeps its not me honest.

Hi Sue,
I remember how hurt and diasppointed you felt by his attitude. No need to apologise, it's good to talk about things like that from time to time, it means you won't dwell on it. Good for you for deleting him :)

"Frustrated Headmaster" is a term for someone who wants to be in charge but is not and is frustrated about it so they act like they are the boss. A 63 year old man at work is like that and he once wanted to be a headmaster but never got the qualifications. His name is Ernie (so he could have got a job as a milkman instead). I had a row with him recently and called him a frustrated headmaster.

lol I too have had a similar experience in the work place a few years ago. This person made it clear that she didn't like my being her manager.. I told her to get used to it or leave in the end as she 'pushed' my patience to the absolute limit.

When I am pushed I can lose it. I am laid back but if someone keeps picking on me I will eventually snap and say something I might regret.

Ernie was showing someone some photos on a small computer and another person went up then I did and Ernie started getting all defensive saying "Sit Down. I did not invite you". I would never say that if someone came to look a photos I was showing someone else. I'd be pleased they showed interest. He then told me to sit down again like I was a child and I then called him a frustrated headmaster. Lucky that was not outside or I would have shoved that laptop in him, and somewhere painful lol.

This is where rudeness and assertiveness seems to be misunderstood.
From what is written Ernie and the person he was showing photos to where having private conversation or intercourse.
A third person then displayed rudeness and assertiveness by butting into the intercourse. Benny then repeated this breach of manners by butting in himself.

He then told me to sit down again like I was a child and I then called him a frustrated headmaster. Lucky that was not outside or I would have shoved that laptop in him, and somewhere painful lol.
It seems your reaction to Ernie's rejection was also insulting.
This is how incidents escalate to a point of becoming offensive.

Obviously I do not know the whole scenario and Ernie may have been rude to show photos to a single individual rather than the group in the first instance.
It shows how people's understanding of rudeness and assertiveness depends on the situation and point of view.
In this case both Ernie and Benny seem to have the impression the rude and assertive behaviour is on the part of the other.
Cheers
Guy
