Hi All,
I have just been scratching about trying to find my daughters Gt.Gt. Grandfather Arthur Crompton c.1879.
I have not been very successful. Because in the back of my mind there was always definate talk in his family, that he was related to Samuel Crompton of Bolton.

Samuel Crompton invented a a spinning machine, which was called The Spinning Jenny, which was later called a Spinning mule.

http://www.bolton.org.uk/samuelcrompton.html

As Arthur married in London I assumed he was born there. But there is a good possibility that he could have been born 'up north'.

Do I work from both ends towards the middle, or from Arthur and work backwards. Or from Samuel, forwards.

Would Arthurs marriage cert be the place to start. I have him married to Rosina Julia Giggens in 1904 Paddington. London.

Need a lot of advice.

Steve.:)

Hi Steve,

Work backwards starting with his marriage certificate and using the census to trace the family, also any other certificates to confirm patentage etc.

Thanks Julie,
I would like to try and get this one right, as my track record is not that good.
Will order marriage cert.
I am now getting desperately low on funds, so I have to watch the pounds (pennies are a thing of the past).:'(

Thanks again.:)

Hi Steve

Finally found Arthur's place of birth in 1911 which is LEEDS.:)

Because I had trouble finding him in 1891/1901 I'll go back to see if I can find him now. At least 1901 will give us some idea of his occupation.

Rosina's place of birth in 1911 is London. I entered quite a few towns in London but no luck. She may be listed as London only.

EDIT** Do you have Arthur in 1891/1901 if not I will post it.
cheers

Hi Ben and Cranky,
As the name Crampton seem to be going back generations, I thought originally that the name could have been mistranscribed. But as the name seems to be 'continuing', I don't think this is the right line.

I am waiting on birth/marriage certs, so hopefully more will be revealed.

If the family changed their name from Crampton to Crompton, that will answer more questions and create others.

Thanks for all the info.

Steve.:)

Hi Steve

I do seem to find more occurrences of the Crampton surname as opposed to Crompton. John Crampton was an ag lab. Would he be if he was the son or grandson of an inventor?

If they are related it is probably more distant.

Samuel Crompton moved to Sharples, near Bolton in 1785, with his son George b1781.
It was a farm apparently, where he continued to spin cotton. He did also keep cattle.
He had 8 children in total, and the 2 youngest died of sickness.

Where are those certs. They are due any day.

Hi

I hope your certs dont get lost in the post like one of mine did. I had to ask for them to send another one.

I have dipped into the pot and sent for 3 more ancestor certs. Two on the Sarah Brain I recently posted a story about. I want a full picture of her life and her birth and death certs will help round that off. I have also sent off for the death cert of Ellen Sewell.

It a shame that they can't be delivered via email, and then we can print them off ourselves.
Can't think of a reason why not.

That is a good idea. I dont know why they havent digitised them so you can pay say £7 for a download. Save a lot of time what with the growing genealogy interest.
