Hi

I think that school admission registers are a next step in building up a picture of our ancestors lives.

As you know I have been absent for a couple of days but I have been away on a genealogy trip. My great grandmother Catherine Isabella Coombs life is now well documented by me.

I have been trawling through school registers of the Islington area of London where she lived as a child. I then found her admission registers at Winchester Street School, Islington, London. They said:-

Coombs, Catherine, admitted 20.3.1893, of 90 Southampton Street, Islington, Father William T Coombs, a Litho Printer, Born 22/9/1889, Discharged 29/1/1897 to Girls School.

Amazing hey?

Hi Julie

Yes, school registers should be at local archives. I got mine from the London Metropolitan Archives. Your local RO should have them.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for sharing your new information with us! It's a great reminder for me too! I have my Grandmother's grade 2 photo and I emailed it to the Paisley council and they put it on their website, but I must ask them if they can release the school records, as she had many siblings and cousins at the same school. Do you know if the 100 year release rule stands for these records?

Cheers,
Jill

Hi

No, at the LMA they have deposited records for as late as the 1970s. That means that the school registers of people who are alive can be viewed.

I would like to upload the image of Catherines school admission as I dont think copyright is a problem but am still wary.

Upload it Benny, as long as you don't publish it you should be fine. Then at least you have it.
Acknowledge in your notes where you got it from.
