Hi, I just found this forum tonight. I am happy to have found a new place to search for my ancestors. After many years and wrong information, I finally found my gg Grandmother, Mary Corfield who I think was born in Lancashire, in 1849. She married Thomas Galvin b. 1849 in Ireland. They married in Saint Michaels Church, in April 1866 and had 5 Children while still living in England. Julia, John, Michael, *Thomas, and Eliza (who appears to have died before they immigrated). They immigrated to the US Sept. 18, 182 and had one more child Edward. Thomas was my great grandfather. I'm trying to find out any information on Mary or Thomas sr.'s parents. What their occupations were, anything. I have many other relatives to search but these are the only ones that I have an area in the UK for. thanks...

Births Mar Qtr 1849
Corfield Mary Liverpool 20 464
Corfield Mary Elizabeth W Derby 20 1086

Not all middle names or even initials appear in census. Place of birth in census might be enough to sort those two out.

Marriages Jun Qtr 1866
Corfield Mary Warrington 8c 200
GALVIN Thomas Warrington 8c 200

I checked the Galvin family (with the children you listed so the right family) in the censuses 1871(in Latchford, Warrington) and 1881 (in Manchester). both times Mary says born Warrington.

There was a Mary Caufield (sic) born Warrington Q4 1848 so that looks likely to be her. This child appears in the 1861 census of Warrington, d.o. Patrick, 40, ag lab, and Mary 37. both born Rosscommon Ireland. There is a son Patrick, 17, born Rosscommon then Mary born Warrington & 4 more children born Warrington. (This family is in the 1851 Warrington census and both Mary and her mother are given as Maria.)

I am guessing the family were catholic which makes searching a lot harder.
Hope this helps, I'm off on a short holiday now so won't be able to do any more on this, sorry!
Elaine

Is this the RC Church?

St Peter And St Michael Church, Weir Lane, Woolston, Warrington.

It will be very difficult finding any info on the families in Ireland.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I see that my ancestor was actually born in Warrington. This helps so much. Now I can research that. My new question would be is there a way to find out when Thomas Galvin came from Ireland to England?

Unfortunately there were no records made therefore none kept of people travelling between Ireland and England at that time.

There are sometimes other ways of getting a rough idea of arrival from first born in England or entries in Trade Directories, indenture records, etc...
