Servants. Male & Female.

Many of my ancestors worked a servants for times, some took up a lifelong occupation as a servant. My 4xgreat grandfather and his son worked as servants for a huge amount of their lives, the father having alternated between London and Kent, probably due to his employers having estates there.

Male and female servants often travelled round and that can explain why many people in the domestic service trade married partners who lived several miles from where they lived. Male servants usually did the horse and carts, drove them, the hevy gardening jobs and butlers jobs whereas women did the cleaning, cooking, housework etc.

Most of my ancestors were farmers and agricultural labourers. With the odd carpenter, plasterer and train driver in the mix

That is why some servants have children who were born in different areas of the country because they travelled around with their rich family.

I do enough travelling around my kitchen and up and down my blinkin' stairs running after three kiddiwinks... so I'm a boni-fi-di servant me-reckons!!!!!

If the offers for travel are first class to the bahamas though I might take you up on it!!!

My great gran was a servant in Sussex in 1911 at Bexhill. She was a housemaid and I only found this out at about 3:30 today.

Most of my ancesters were in the pottery industry. However I made an interesting discovery recently I think one of my g.grandmas could have been a servant, just need to research a little further.

They estimate that 1 million women were working as servants in the 1901 census. That goes to show how popular the occupation was. A lot of my ancestors worked as servants, if not only for a while. Childhood finished early in them days.
