I'm looking to find the service records for my great grandfather.

I have his full name, regiment and rank, regimental number, and other basic details.

With that information am I likely to find his full service record? I cannot find anything on ancestry - if its not on ancestry does that mean its not likely to be anywhere else? I would love to go and have a look at the national archives one day, but unfortunately i can't at the mo. I know there are a lot of people who offer the service of looking in kew for you, but they are just so expensive.

If anyone can help me or put me in contact with anyone that could that would be great.

I will put all his details up later (they're on the other comp), but his name is richard sydney thorne and he was a sapper in the royal engineers WW1.

Thanks

Hi jen0

Have you looked at the WW1 Army Pension Records on Ancestry? They list many soldiers who fought in the First World War.

Unfortunately a lot of WW! Service records havent survived but theire is a good survival rate of Pension records.
