Hi

My 2 Great uncles were shale miners in Scotland before the WW1 broke out, if anyone has info on what the work was like I would be very interested to know.
Thanks
JM

Hi JM,
I also had a lot of Shale miners in my family.
The shale contained oil that was used to make Paraffin, candle wax, vasoline etc,. The shale was brought to the surface and baked.
The shale mines were mostly found in the Mid & West Lothian areas, hence the Red Slag heaps (bings), still seen to this day. The industry ceased around 1963.
On Google, under shale miners, there is a 'Historical Research Report', that has a lot of interviews with ex shale miners, very good and interesting reading, on all aspects of the shale miners & their way of life.

Hi Iain

Thank you for your interesting reply.

Yes you are right, my family lived in West Lothian, the brothers are my Grandfathers younger brothers, they were shale miners, my Grandfather was already in the Army, then James the youngest joined up and Archie continued
mining, I was wondering why Archie did not join the Army but I have been told that you did'nt have to if you were a miner as mining was needed now I know why if it was oil that was obtained from the shale. I am just on the long road of Family History and it is very interesting yet hard to find out info sometimes.

It must have been a very hard life in those days compared to now.

James had sons who were also shale miners, they lodged at a house in Saline in Fife just across the Forth Bridge (which by the way THEIR Father was an engineer on) maybe there was more work in Fife or they opened another mine there.

Thank you for your info and I will check out the google site on shale miners.

JM
